Sleep is one of those things that’s at a premium in this house. An uninterrupted night of refreshing sleep is one of the things on the top of my list when it comes to looking after myself, but with a partner working shifts and a little one to worry about it can be hard to manage a lovely, uninterrupted night of good quality shut-eye.

In the States, this week is National Sleep Awareness Week, and I think that’s a perfect opportunity to draw attention to all the ways a great night’s sleep can really do us all some good – and how to get a really good night! Relaxation is key, and although I can’t fault the relaxing benefits of a spa day, the only downside to experiencing some of the best spas in the UK, is having to drag myself back to reality (quite often via National rail or the M25) which can take the shine off a sublimely relaxing massage or beauty treatment.

That’s why some of my favourite spa visits have been the really luxurious spa hotel overnight stays. I’ll always remember the gorgeous suite I stayed in at the Oulton Hall near Leeds…that was blissful. The treatments relaxed me to bliss point, the food and wine added to the feeling of pure indulgence and I cannot tell a lie, I was asleep within minutes of my head hitting the pillow. I had been intending to write my spa review before bed but my eyes wouldn’t stay open and I had one of the best night’s sleep I’d had in a long time. I felt amazing the following morning. I could have camped out there all week.

The combination of good food, relaxation and a comfy bed seems to work wonders for spa guests. There are no worries about catching a train back home if I know I have the whole night to chill out in the spa hotel.
