About

Got a thing for spa resorts with lavish leisure facilities, destination dining and one of Britain’s most scenic views outside its window? We’ve got a feeling you’re going to like it at Lion Quays Resort. Situated on the banks of the UNESCO World Heritage Llangollen Canal in Shropshire, it has an idyllic waterside setting amid the ancient landscapes of the Welsh-English border.

With many of its 82 bedrooms offering tranquil canalside views, you’ll feel relaxed before you’ve even set foot in the spa. But while your Hypnos bed feels so inviting, chances are you won’t want to linger in your luxury room for too long. Not when there’s a huge Grecian-style swimming pool, starlit three-level steam room, a Finnish sauna, hibernation lounge, steam room and glass-fronted sanarium waiting for you!

Because it’s close to Shrewsbury, you can combine a spot of culture with all that pampering you’ll be doing. The magnificent mediaeval splendour of Shrewsbury Castle is nearby, as is the charming town of Oswestry, so be sure to check out its shops and cafés while you’re here. The historic city of Chester, boasting lots of Roman heritage and a world-famous zoo, is just a short drive to the north, too.

After all that sightseeing and shopping, dinner at Lion Quays Resort’s elegant Waterside restaurant awaits. Expect to find traditional British cuisine at its finest, along with beautiful views overlooking the Llangollen Canal.

The Spa & Wellness at Lion Quays Resort

Sink into serenity at the spa at Lion Quays Resort, a place where only the very best will do. Designed for your utter rest and relaxation you’ll feel your shoulders drop the minute you see the shimmering blue waters of the 25m Grecian-style swimming pool.

Here, 12 luxurious treatment rooms offer rituals from top-notch spa brand Decléor. But being pampered and pummelled is just the start of your journey into bliss. In fact with so many unique features on offer, this isn’t just a spa. It’s an adult-only playground designed exclusively for escapism.

Flit between hydrotherapy pool, Finnish sauna, star-lit steam room and hibernation lounge. Lay back on a suspended heated lounger in the Halotherapy Room and rock yourself to sleep in the Himalayan pink rock salted air. This sumptuous sanctuary even lets you drift effortlessly into weightlessness with its Salt Floatation Pod.

Prefer a bit of seclusion with your self-care? Some spa packages to Lion Quays give you access to its private spa suites. With three on offer, this romantic oasis provides your own changing area and a luxurious spa pool, barrel sauna or cedar hot tub. Each one has an outdoor garden, loungers and dual treatment spaces for a sense of wellbeing you both can share.

The Gym & Fitness at Lion Quays Resort

Sticking to your fitness goals while you’re on a decadent spa break can be a tough sell. But the state-of-the-art gym at Lion Quays Resort will make you want to take a break from all the splurging, pampering and treating yourself. No, really!

The air-conditioned gym is kitted out with state-of-the-art equipment, including a fully interactive indoor cycling studio. Build some muscle in the Technogym free weights area, or take part in a fun group class in the spacious studio. But will you choose Zumba, Body Pump or a spot of Yogalates?

If you fancy a bit of vitamin D while you workout, the hotel has plenty of ways to sweat in the sunshine. Sporty types can hit the tennis courts for a friendly game, or just lace up your trainers and go for a leisurely canalside stroll towards Llangollen.

Restaurants & Food at Lion Quays Resort

Ultra-indulgent spa breaks need ultra-indulgent eating and drinking options to match. Luckily at Lion Quays Resort you’ll find the food is every bit as fine as the thermal experiences.

If you’re here for a spa package, afternoon teas, lunches and grazing boards are served in the spa lounge where you can eat without having to get dressed. Just watch out for crumbs in your robe!

Over at the leisure club, the relaxed setting of Cafe Ash is the place to sip on a post-spa cappuccino and nibble on a fresh sandwich.

Fancy something a bit more à la carte? The hotel’s Waterside restaurant is well worth getting dressed up for. Modern and sociable, there’s a traditional menu and extensive drinks list. Dine in style indoors or enjoy head out to the terrace - nothing beats a meal served up with fabulous canalside views.

Very impressed. Chose afternoon package. Easy location and big car park. Arrived and directed to restaurant where we had a tasty seafood platter! We were then guided around and used the big, clean changing rooms. Downstairs to the spa where we had an amazing time in the hydro pool, providing fast jets. Used steam (with led) sauna and heated seats which swing! Facial and massage was amazing and products used. Relaxed in hibernation suite with fruit and shot. Loved everything and all very clean, had a wonderful calming classy atmosphere. Highly recommend and will definitely return!

A gorgeous Spa, with lots of facilities. Staff were attentive and helpful. The hotel itself seems a little tired, we ate lunch outside and there was weeds growing all over the floor, a shame as the spa experience was lovely.

I had a wonderful weekend at Lion Quays Resort. The rooms were spacious and comfortable, and the location next to the quay was beautiful. The spa facilities were excellent, with a good-sized pool, a well-equipped gym, an impressive hydrotherapy pool, and excellent sauna facilities. Highly recommended for a relaxing getaway.

It was our second time in this spa such a wonderful place however after half a day of relaxation we complete forgot to pick up our gift at the end of the day, the lady took our robes and flip-flops and didn’t mention about the gift. We came home after driving nearly 2 hours home and realise we didn’t receive our gift. I will give 4 star just because we didn’t receive our gift.

The foot massage clinched it for me!

The water in the main swimming pool was refreshingly cool and provided a welcome dip after the sauna and steam rooms. I loved the lighting too. The hydrotherapy pool had the strongest 'swan pipe' I have ever experienced! It was amazing. The highlight for me though was the aromatherapy foot massage given by Rhiannon - it felt more like reflexology than massage and was utterly magical. I will definitely return - for the foot massage if nothing else!

The spa itself was really nice. 2 saunas and a Jacuzzi pool. Hot stone relaxer beds. The only thing disappointing was the steam room was closed. Given robes, flip flops and towels to use. We stayed a couple of hours as part of our package with 3 course meal, overnight stay and breakfast. Was a nice short break away.

For overnight stays, you can use the leisure facilities before you check-in on your day of arrival, and right up until 4pm on the day of departure.

Where is Lion Quays Resort located?

Is it in Wales, or is it in Shropshire? Lion Quays Resort gives you a great flavour of both! That’s because you’ll find it just north of Oswestry in Shropshire. This ancient market town is almost entirely surrounded by Wales, but is in actual fact in north west Shropshire.

Lion Quays itself is picturesquely situated on the Llangollen Canal, the only UNESCO World Heritage site to sit in two different countries, Wales and England. Near the Welsh border and close to Shrewsbury, Chester and Manchester it’s the ideal location for those who love to combine a pampering break with a little sightseeing.

Does Lion Quays Resort have a dress code?

Lion Quays Resort has a home-from-home feel and as such there’s no strict dress code. Having said that, you may feel more comfortable going smart-casual if you’re dining in its elegant Waterside restaurant.

Is Lion Quays Resort family-friendly?

It is. While treatments at the spa are for those aged 16 and over, children are welcome at the hotel, with family and interconnecting rooms that let you all spread out. Kids can splash in the pool on weekdays from 10.30am to 11.30am and 2pm to 6pm and between 10am to 4pm on weekends (times may vary during school holidays).

There’s plenty of family-friendly activities nearby. Little explorers will love Chirk Castle, a magnificent mediaeval fortress just four miles away. Or take animal-mad little ones to Chester Zoo. It’s 30 miles away but, with thousands of animals and 128 acres of zoological gardens, it’s well worth going out of your way for.

Is Lion Quays Resort accessible?

The hotel has bedrooms with partially modified accessible features, ground floor access and lifts to all public areas. There are accessible toilets on the ground floor and wheelchair access to reception, restaurant, and the bar. Please note that the spa is accessed by a covered walkway, a short distance from the accommodation.

Is Lion Quays Resort pet-friendly?

Sorry. While dogs can join you on the outdoor terrace dining areas they can’t stay overnight in the hotel (with the exception of service dogs).

Does Lion Quays Resort have a golf course?

No, but if you like to pamper and putt, you’re in the right place. Henlle Golf Club is just a minute’s drive from the Lion Quays Resort. And, if you fancy a walk through the countryside, it's a short ten-minute walk from the hotel’s front door. Set in over 130 acres of Georgian Parkland, natural lakes and pools make for some tricky tee shots.
