A day in the life…

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to work in a medi-spa or cosmetic surgery clinic? We spoke to Dr Paul Stephenton from Epsom Skin Clinics, to see what his typical day is like, and the sort of beauty procedures he carries out in his clinic.

“My day begins at 9am when I arrive at the clinic. I greet the other members of my clinic team and discuss the day ahead. I look at the computer to see what’s in store for staff at both branches and for myself. Things change in real time as patients will cancel or book on the day.

“My top priority is to make sure that our clients’ needs and expectations are managed to the highest possible standard. I often spend half a day at the private skin clinic and half doing NHS work so my priority is to keep closely to time – I need to keep the private clinic and my NHS clinics running smoothly.

“I can see up to 18 clients in a full day at the skin clinic - and it usually is full. What I really enjoy about the skin clinic is the diversity of my day. I can go from a simple query about a rash to removing a facial vein with lasers to removing two litres of fat from an abdomen!

“My initial consultations last around 30 minutes but follow-ups and repeat Botox treatments can take as little as 15 minutes. Minor operations to remove unwanted moles can take up to 45 minutes depending on the complexity of the procedure - careful stitching needs time and a steady hand.

“The most challenging part of my day is planning the correct treatment for each and every client as they are all so individual. Clients often come to me with many areas of concern and need my guidance to achieve the result they are looking for.

“As part of their initial consultation I have plenty of time to discuss all the things they are concerned about and what options we have at the clinic that can help. After the consultation clients leave knowing all their options, the benefits and possible risks of the treatments options and can make an informed decision on the direction they would like to take.

“The most rewarding part of my day has to be when a client tells me that they are pleased with my work. I often get this reaction from something like Laser Liposuction, and when we have one of these scheduled, the clinic routine changes completely.

“We use two rooms, so that a nurse, a therapist from the surgical team and myself spend an entire morning or afternoon slowly and methodically sculpting various body parts into a more pleasing shape. We can remove up to three litres of excess fat from a client and often within a couple of weeks, clients have lost dress sizes. I find this procedure especially rewarding because it uses my experience and training to the full.”

"At the end of my day I will have seen a broad range of patients, some private and some NHS, and hopefully they've left my consulting room either clearer on the procedures they might wish to have, or happy with the work I've done."
