A ‘new you’ for the New Year

The start of a new year offers the perfect opportunity to make some positive changes. In this article, we take a look at some simple ways you can make over your life in 2019.

Diet and fitness

‘Eat more healthily’ and ‘exercise more’ are two common New Year resolutions, but to keep the momentum going beyond the first week of January, it is important to set some realistic goals. For example, if you love chocolate, vowing to give it up completely will probably not work out over the long-term. Likewise, promising yourself that you will get up at 5am each day and go jogging for an hour will only become a habit if you love getting up early and being outside in all weathers! Look at your current diet and fitness regime and see what workable, sustainable changes you can make that you can stick to permanently.

A trip to a health spa can help you to kickstart a wellness regime. These spas offer a range classes and facilities, complemented by a nutritious menu.

Health and wellbeing

In our busy lives, it can be all too easy to neglect our mental health and wellbeing. If you’ve been struggling with this, maybe 2019 is the year you can bring about some changes. This could mean making time in your schedule each day for meditation, yoga or a relaxing bath with essential oils. Alternatively, you might find that spending more time outside in the fresh air gives you a mental boost. If you work, make sure you take your full break allowance every day and also use up all your allocated holiday leave. If work-life balance is an issue, talk to your manager about flexible working.

Of course, spas have an important role to play in promoting wellness, not least because they offer a quiet and relaxing space with no outside distractions. A further advantage is that you can tailor the spa experience to suit your needs, whether you like to stay active or just lay back and relax. There are lots of different types of spa out there that offer a wide range of treatments and facilities.

Getting out of a rut

While establishing a daily routine can be a good thing, getting into a rut can lead to frustration and the continuation of some unhelpful habits. If you find yourself stagnating, maybe it’s time to rethink some aspects of your life. This might be something significant, like a new job, a house move, or making a long-held dream a reality. However, it might also mean something smaller that can add real value to your life. Examples may include:

  • Exploring your local area – such as going to an art gallery or taking a walk in the park
  • Taking a weekend or evening class
  • Starting a home-based hobby – such as baking or reading
  • Turning off the phone and TV and committing to a day (or few hours) each week of quality time with your partner, family or yourself

If you’re not sure where to start making changes, try making two lists: one of things you love and one of things you would like to change about your life. Work on doing more of the stuff on the first list and taking some proactive steps towards achieving the changes on the second list.
