About

Haven’t heard about The Retreat at Elcot Park yet? Where have you been hiding? This blissful Berkshire bolthole’s been making waves in the press since it opened in June 2022. It already has a mantlepiece groaning with awards and bagged the top spot on The Times and Sunday Times list of the top 100 places to stay in the UK - seriously impressive for a hotel that’s been open less than a year.

Step inside and you’ll instantly see what all the fuss is about. With more unique touches than you can shake a manicured finger at, the red-brick Regency pile oozes luxury, heritage and history. The former home of poet Percy Bysshe Shelley’s mum is immaculately maintained both inside and out, from its elegant grand entrance hall to the croquet lawns and tennis courts.

With a warm and whimsical decor (think bright colours, squishy sofas and carefully selected antiques) you’ll feel like you’re in another, altogether more stylish, world. Sweep up the staircase to 55 quirky-yet-comfy bedrooms and suites, all complete with plush furnishings and in-room perks, like a bottle of ginger liqueur and a help-yourself pantry.

Blissfully unstuffy, this is a place with a real buzz about it. Grab a pair of boots from the 'welly wall' for a tramp around the 16 acres of grounds, then head to the bustling courtyard with its bakery, coffee shop, nail salon and monthly farmers’ market. There’s a year-round calendar of events and activities keeping things lively, from live music to cocktail making.

But it's the Signet spa that is The Retreat at Elcot Park’s jewel in the crown. Soak up the sunshine at the heated outdoor pool, then head inside for the hydrotherapy pool, Himalayan salt sauna and aroma steam room. Drift away in the ultimate relaxation of the salt flotation pod, or unwind with a ritual in one of four sumptuous treatment rooms.

Despite its secluded setting, The Retreat at Elcot Park is conveniently located about an hour from London. The proximity allows for quick day trips to the city's urban delights, but with so much to do on the hotel’s doorstep there’s no need to stray far.

Not-to-be-missed Highclere Castle (made famous in Downton Abbey) is just down the road, and there are some fabulous walks in the North Wessex Downs that start and finish at the hotel’s front door. Prefer to shop til you drop? A short drive takes you to the Designer Outlet in Swindon, one of the largest covered designer outlets in Europe.

Yet you might find it difficult to pull away from The Retreat at Elcot Park. Take your palate on a culinary adventure in the atmospheric brasserie 1772, or try the tasting menu of sushi and sashimi at Yu Pan-Asian Restaurant. The Retreat at Elcot Park doesn't just offer a stay. This swish hotel elevates the very concept of authentically luxurious retreats.

Gloriously heated, it’s long enough for laps, or just take a leisurely dip as you catch up with friends. There’s even a poolside bar for drinks and snacks you can enjoy from the comfort of your chic lounger.

Encased in your snuggly robe and slippers, pad inside for a journey of the thermal kind. This sumptuous sanctuary includes a hydrotherapy pool, Himalayan salt sauna and aroma steam room to relax, revive and restore you.

When it’s time for your treatment, there’s a menu of rituals designed to spoil you, whether you’re seeking beautiful skin or inner calm. Pure and natural, and with a holistic philosophy, they’re deeply nurturing for your whole wellbeing.

The Gym & Fitness at The Retreat at Elcot Park

Arrive frazzled, leave feeling the best version of yourself, thanks to all the fitness-fostering activities on offer at The Retreat at Elcot Park. It’s a true wellness haven, featuring a sleek and stylish gym, along with a fitness studio dedicated to strengthening, stretching and challenging you from top to toe.

Hotel guests can work up a sweat in style in the Matrix gym, where high performance equipment from treadmills to bikes keep you entertained and track your workouts. Or hit the studio where an alphabet of classes from Aqua to Zumba are available for a small fee, subject to availability.

Having fun in the fresh air is also firmly encouraged here. Stroll, power walk or jog around the grounds, or head further afield for nature walks to a local vineyard. Bring your walking boots because the nearest village, Kintbury, is steeped in heritage and nature. And because it’s just two miles away, the best way to explore it is on foot.

Reconnect with friends over croquet, or have a fun game of doubles on the tennis courts. You can bring your own rackets, or borrow them from the hotel. And if you’re feeling zen, yoga and Pilates classes are held in the studio, outside in the tranquil walled garden or under the age-old oak trees.

Restaurants & Food at The Retreat at Elcot Park

Ultra-indulgent spa breaks need ultra-indulgent eating and drinking options to match. Luckily at The Retreat at Elcot Park you’ll find the food is every bit as fine as the spa treatments. But where should you head first? Here’s a quick rundown.

The Atlas Room

Glam up and head down to the stylish bar and lounge, where you can begin your evening sipping an expertly mixed cocktail along with an early evening snack.

1772 Brasserie

Named for the year the original house was built, 1772 Brasserie has bistro classics that are the stuff of legend. Relaxed yet elegant, people rave about its oysters, ribeye of salt-aged beef and the crispy cauliflower popcorn served as nibbles.

Stretchy waistbands at the ready because the brasserie also incorporates the light-filled Orangery where the breakfast buffet groans with waffle, pancake and bacon-butty stations.

Yu Pan-Asian Restaurant

Tuck into awesome tasting menus featuring sushi, tempura and curries at the hotel's fine dining ‘occasion’ restaurant, where rust-red walls, mounted woven fans and bamboo mirrors set the scene for sophisticated dining.

The Courtyard

If you need a mid-morning snack, there is a deli/bakery in the courtyard for grab-and-go pastries and coffee.

The Terrace

The Terrace is open during the summer months and offers a variety of light bites and drinks, as well as a barbecue on certain nights.

I met my friend who lives in the opposite direction for a catch up and a treat away from husbands and children. The spa was beautiful. High quality facilities and beautiful surroundings. Particularly loved the warm infinity pool outside. Friendly and attentive staff.

In the afternoon sessions they even get the inflatables out!

With activities laid on during the school holidays, you’ll also find a large outdoor play area, games room and a TV salon. Picky eaters will love the kid-friendly dishes on the children’s menus. Cots and highchairs are available on-request, and the hotel has a number of family rooms, which can accommodate up to two adults and two children.

Does The Retreat at Elcot Park have a golf course?

If time on a golf course helps you swing into relaxation, you’re in luck. While there isn’t a golf course right on-site, here are two very close by. Nearest to The Retreat at just three miles away, the nine-hole Deanwood Park Golf Club features rolling downs and tranquil rivers. Slightly further away at six miles, Newbury & Crookham Golf Club is one of the oldest and prettiest 18-hole courses in England.
