About
Spotting red deer in leafy Richmond Park is seriously stress-busting, but a spa day or stay at Harbour Hotel Richmond might just top it. Taking pride of place on Richmond Hill, this Georgian hotel is home to the award-winning HarSPA & Club, Richmond’s one and only luxury spa. With a 20m indoor pool, a hydrotherapy pool and a garden of bubbling Scandinavian hot tubs, it’s hard to believe you’re only 20 minutes from central London – not that you’ll be in any rush to leave.
Dating back to the 18th century, the hotel sits on one of London’s most celebrated hills, where the sweeping view over the Thames is so treasured it’s protected by an Act of Parliament. Originally four separate Georgian houses stitched together, it pairs period charm with Harbour Hotels’ playful, bohemian style. No wonder it’s been named one of The Sunday Times’ Top 100 Best British Hotels and one of The Times’ coolest hotels in London.
Step past grand columns into a lobby where classical busts sit alongside ferns and a tree branch sprouting from the ceiling – very fitting for a hotel with one of the capital’s biggest green spaces on its doorstep! Rooms and suites continue the town-meets-city theme, balancing cosmopolitan chic with rural character, and they’re fully air-conditioned too – a blessing on sticky summer nights. Thoughtful touches include Bramley toiletries and complimentary gin. Nightcap: sorted!
But whether you’re staying over or just here for the day, HarSPA & Club is the star of the show. Choose from TEMPLESPA and Elemis rituals that blend holistic therapies with contemporary techniques, then swim a few lengths of the atmospheric 20m pool, warm up in the sauna and steam room, or get invigorated in the hydrotherapy pool. Best of all is the spa garden. Sinking into a cedar hot tub as the sun goes down feels a world away from the city. Fitness fans will find a state-of-the-art gym, cardio suite and spin studio, too.
Afterwards, follow the botanical buzz to The Gate Kitchen, Bar & Terrace. Open all day and a firm favourite with locals, it’s the place for leisurely breakfasts, lingering lunches and post-spa negronis – and when the sun’s out, the secret-garden-style courtyard is exactly where you’ll want to be. Just save room for afternoon tea. BBC Good Food named it one of London’s best affordable options, so consider it research.
Borrow a pair of Hunter wellies and explore Richmond Park, right on your doorstep. It’s London’s largest Royal Park, where more than 600 deer roam free. Back down the hill, stroll along the Thames riverside, browse the independent shops of Richmond town centre or catch a show at Richmond Theatre. Kew Gardens, Hampton Court Palace and Twickenham Stadium, the home of English rugby, are all within easy reach. Then head back up the hill for round two in the hot tub.

The Spa & Wellness at Richmond Harbour Hotel & Spa
Who says you have to leave the capital for a taste of countryside calm? Tucked away in London’s greenest borough, HarSPA & Club is Richmond’s one and only luxury spa – but it would stand out even with plenty of competition. After all, The Times has named it one of the UK’s best new spas. Not bad for the suburbs!
Start with a few lengths of the 20m indoor pool, then warm up in the sauna and steam room, or let the hydrotherapy pool work its magic. But the real showstopper is outside, where the secluded spa garden feels like a little slice of the countryside. Fancy some contrast therapy? Sink into a cedar Scandinavian hot tub as the sun sets, then brave the plunge pool for an invigorating blast. Your body will thank you when you retreat to the relaxation area afterwards.
Ready to be pampered? With 13 treatment rooms, including two for couples, you’re spoilt for choice. Try the TEMPLESPA bestseller, the Drift Away massage with Mediterranean essential oils, or go a little more high-tech with a Dermalux LED light therapy facial. Then all that’s left is to refuel with a cold-pressed juice and let the calm of Richmond linger a little longer.
The Gym & Fitness at Richmond Harbour Hotel & Spa
Planning to break a sweat between treatments? HarSPA & Club has you covered, with a Technogym, an extensive cardio suite and a spin studio. Its fitness studios also host classes including HIIT and Les Mills sessions, so it’s worth asking what’s on when you book. And once the hard work’s done, the pool, sauna and hot tubs are waiting to soothe those muscles.
But with Richmond Park a few minutes’ walk away, it seems a shame to stay indoors. Lace up your trainers and tackle the Tamsin Trail, a traffic-free loop of around seven miles that circles the park, with the resident deer for company. Cyclists love the park’s sweeping roads, and on Saturday mornings runners flock to nearby Bushy Park for its Parkrun, the very place where the global phenomenon began back in 2004.
Prefer to take to the water? The Thames is at the bottom of the hill, where you can hire a stand-up paddleboard and see Richmond’s riverside from a whole new angle. For something gentler, follow the Thames Path past the water meadows at Petersham, or wander through the Isabella Plantation, a woodland garden hidden inside Richmond Park that bursts into colour when the azaleas bloom each spring.
Restaurants & Food at Richmond Harbour Hotel & Spa
The Gate Kitchen, Bar & Terrace is where Richmond locals come to eat, drink and be merry – and once you’ve visited, it’s easy to see why. With its open kitchen, hanging plants and hip, bohemian vibe, this all-day restaurant has the kind of buzz you’d usually have to head into town for.
Each space has its own personality. Settle into the Moroccan-inspired lounge for a pre-dinner livener or afternoon tea, or grab a table in the bustling main restaurant. And when spring and summer roll around, the al fresco terrace feels like stumbling on a secret garden. It’s the perfect spot for a long, lazy lunch (with one of The Gate’s signature negronis to follow, of course!).
On the menu, expect comfort food with modern twists, made with fresh, locally sourced seasonal produce. Sundays call for the indulgent roast, while spa-goers can keep things light at HarSPA & Club’s wellbeing juice bar and café, where cold-pressed juices are the order of the day.

We were supposed to go to the Richmond Harbour Hotel but the spa burnt down so we were transferred to the Guildford spa as this was the most convenient. Friendly staff greeted us showed us around and gave us our itinerary. We decided to have lunch first, again friendly efficient staff before we sat by the very small pool which was outside with a Jacuzzi in it. A glass of Prosecco was served and we enjoyed the sunshine until it was time for our treatments. My beautician was called Sasha she was friendly chatty and did an excellent job on my shoulders and back. Highly recommend this young lady. Although the changing rooms and in fact the whole spa suite area was very small in comparison to other spas we have used it was perfectly adequate. The staff were all friendly and it was clean.

Amazing package with a huge lunch and then on to some relaxation time armed with a glass of Prosecco . By the time we’d chilled out in sauna, steam room , and a swim in the pool it was just great to chat on the sun beds. All staff were so friendly and accommodating . We rounded off our day with a wonderful bespoke 40 min treatment before we went home feeling quite zoned out by the whole experience. Great quirky venue, excellent value for money. Loved it!!!!

Took my Mum for her birthday, hotel is clean and tidy, the facilities in the spa area were great. Fantastic hydrotherapy pool, and newly refurbished sauna and steam room. Massage for me really hit the spot and worked on my shoulders, but it was still relaxing. Afternoon tea had variety and there was a good choice at breakfast. Lovely, lovely staff, especially Anne on reception and Natalie the masseuse.

My husband and I are just back from an overnight spa break at the Richmond Gate Hotel, lovely location near Richmond lovely park. The break was a treat to my hubby for his birthday and I must say we both really enjoyed the stay including the 55 minute treatment. Our room was located in the main part of the hotel, which was filled with charm and character. The bed was so comfy! We decided to take the light meal included in the package in our room. This was also lovely. With lots to choose from. More of a main meal to us as we didn't eat until 5.30pm. Breakfast in the morning was good. After this we used the spa facilities before preparing to go home. The robe and slippers provided were handy, we used these to go to the spa. The sauna, steam room and hydro pool were all ok, though the steam room needs a refurbish. The fact you have to walk through the hotel to access the spa facilities is a little odd but doesn't detract from the experience. We would definitely go again.

The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The massage was also great. The room was beautifully decorated and very modern but the window view wasn't very appealing but it wasn't too bad. The rest of the hotel was clean but a bit old fashioned in terms of decor. Would definitely go back! Food was bland but bearable.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Harbour Hotel Richmond do afternoon tea?
It certainly does, and BBC Good Food named it one of London’s best affordable afternoon teas. The three-tiered spread has a playful secret-garden theme, and past menus have featured mini pea arancini, warm scones with garden berry jam and a chocolate mousse served in an edible plant pot, complete with chocolate “soil”.
Enjoy it in the Moroccan-inspired lounge. But when the sun’s out, nab a table in the pretty garden for tea al fresco. Fancy some fizz? You can always add a glass of Prosecco to enjoy alongside your aromatic brew. Well, it would be rude not to.
Does Harbour Hotel Richmond have a swimming pool?
It sure does. HarSPA & Club’s heated 20m indoor pool is long enough for a proper swim, so you can clock up a few lengths before sinking into the hydrotherapy pool or heading out to the hot tubs in the spa garden.
Our tip? Little ones (aged three and over) have dedicated swim times daily from 8.30am to 10am and 4.30pm to 6pm. If you’re after a kid-free dip, aim for the hours in between.
Does Harbour Hotel Richmond have accommodation?
It does, and it’s the perfect excuse to turn a spa day into a spa stay. Rooms and suites blend cosmopolitan style with countryside character, fitting for a hotel with Richmond Park on its doorstep. Choose from cosy doubles and twins to more spacious Executive rooms and suites.
Every room is fully air-conditioned (a lifesaver on steamy London summer nights) and comes with Bramley toiletries and complimentary gin. Book an Executive room and you’ll find complimentary sherry waiting too. Cheers to that!
What are the check-in and check-out times at Harbour Hotel Richmond?
For overnight stays, check-in is from 3pm and check-out is by 11am. For spa days, arrival times depend on the package you’ve booked, so it’s best to check your booking confirmation.
Where is the Harbour Hotel Richmond located?
It’s right at the top of Richmond Hill in south-west London, beside Richmond Gate, one of the original entrances to Richmond Park when Charles I enclosed it in 1637. Step out of the door and you’re in London’s largest Royal Park, with deer grazing among the ancient oaks. Wander a few minutes the other way and you’ll reach the famous terrace view, looking out over the Thames as it winds through Petersham Meadows.
The location feels more like a village than a city, and you only need to head down the hill to find Richmond’s independent boutiques, riverside pubs and cafés.
Does Harbour Hotel Richmond have a dress code?
There’s no formal dress code, but guests are asked to look presentable and you may feel more comfortable in smart-casual. Basically, save the fluffy robe for the spa and swap it for something a little more polished before heading to The Gate!
What’s the history of Harbour Hotel Richmond?
The hotel is actually made up of four Georgian properties, dating from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, that were joined together over the years. It’s now Grade II listed, which explains its elegant stucco facades and columned balconies, as well as the charmingly quirky layout inside. Formerly known as the Richmond Gate Hotel, it joined the Harbour Hotels family in 2018.
It’s in pretty illustrious company, too. Just along the hill is Wick House, built for the painter Sir Joshua Reynolds, while nearby Downe House has been home to playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan and, much later, Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall.
Is Harbour Hotel Richmond family-friendly?
Little ones are welcome, though the spa is mostly a grown-up affair. Treatments are for guests aged 18 and over, and under-18s can’t use the sauna, steam room, hydrotherapy pool, hot tubs or gym. Children aged three and over can splash about in the pool daily from 8.30am to 10am and 4.30pm to 6pm, as long as they’re with an adult.
There aren’t any family rooms, but some rooms connect, so there’s space for everyone. Children are well catered for at The Gate too, with a dedicated children’s menu full of family favourites.
And there’s plenty to keep young explorers busy nearby. Go deer-spotting in Richmond Park, head up into the trees on the Treetop Walkway at Kew Gardens, or get lost (on purpose) in the famous maze at Hampton Court Palace.
Is Harbour Hotel Richmond accessible?
As the hotel is housed in a historic Georgian building, it isn’t fully accessible. However, some rooms have walk-in showers and can be reached by lift.
In the spa, the pool is accessed via steps with a single handrail, and there’s no hoist or ramp. If you have a disability, reduced mobility or any additional needs, it’s best to contact the hotel before your visit so the team can discuss how to support you.
Is Harbour Hotel Richmond dog-friendly?
Sorry! With the exception of service dogs, pets can’t stay at the hotel. But if you’re out for a walk with your four-legged friend, you’re welcome to pop in for a drink. Dogs can join you in the lounge or on the terrace, though not in the restaurant (service dogs excepted). Consider it the perfect pit stop after a stomp around Richmond Park – just remember to keep them on a lead around the deer.
Does Harbour Hotel Richmond have a golf course?
Sorry, it doesn’t. But golfers are in luck, because Richmond Park Golf Course is just a short drive away on the other side of the park. It’s a public pay-and-play venue, so there’s no membership needed, and there are two 18-hole courses to choose from. There’s also a driving range if you just fancy a few swings. Tee times need to be booked and paid for online in advance, and you can hire clubs if you’re travelling light.
