About

When it’s time to recharge your batteries, the exquisite Thornton Hall Hotel & Spa beckons. Located just outside the chocolate box-pretty village of Thornton Hough on the Wirral Peninsula in north-west England, this sumptuous retreat will tick all of your pampering boxes.

The indulgence begins long before you’ve donned your robe and slippers. A picturesque journey through tumbling hills and rolling countryside immerses you in an oasis of calm before you’ve even reached Thornton Hall’s grand front door. It’s such a peaceful setting, it’s hard to believe the bright lights of Chester and Liverpool are just 20 minutes away.

Once the home of wealthy shipping merchants the Bamford Brothers of Liverpool, many of its original Victorian features are still there to be admired. Gaze up at gorgeous oak carvings and dine under sparkling chandeliers adorning the ornate ceiling of the two AA rosette-winning Lawns Grill.

Nearby, you can visit the excellent Port Sunlight Museum or take in the waterfront views of the Rivers Dee and Mersey. Further afield you can shop ‘til you drop in Liverpool, go on a magical mystery tour to The Beatles Story, or soak up the history at Roman city of Chester.

But our guess is you won’t be able to tear yourself away from all that’s on offer at this splendid country retreat. Stop the world and get off for an hour or two in Thornton Hall’s spa with its 11 zen-like treatment rooms, Roman-style swimming pool, outdoor spa pools and thermal zone.

Keep the bliss going long into the night with a sumptuous dinner at either the superb Lawns Grill or the spa’s elegant Brasserie, before floating off to bed in one of 62 character-filled bedrooms crammed with luxe touches.

The Spa & Wellness at Thornton Hall Hotel & Spa

When it comes to R&R, nothing beats checking into a spa. And at Thornton Hall’s temple of tranquility, everything has been designed to pamper, preen and polish you to perfection.

Your journey of delight begins stretched out on a sumptuous sun lounger in the spa garden. Sip a Prosecco in one of the two outdoor spa pools or just soak up the bubbles (along with the countryside views) in total peace and quiet. Weather being a bit British? With water this warm, who cares?

Invigorate your senses inside at the Thermal Zone. This special spa ritual introduces your body to hot and cold temperatures to enhance your mood, helping you reach a state of deep relaxation. Flit between the Romanesque swimming pool, monsoon rain showers, sauna and steam room. But will you be able to brave the snow cave?

Keep the bliss going with a treatment. Results-driven Elemis facials and beauty treats are there to rejuvenate your skin, nails and your joie de vivre. The self-applied mud rasul is perfect for couples or small groups of friends, or indulge with a nurturing Espa massage. There’s even a hair and beauty spa to add the perfect finishing touch.

Wind the day off with a visit to the Tranquility Suite. Snuggle into a comfortable lounger in this haven within a haven, while mood lighting and subtle music helps you drift even deeper into contentment.

The Gym & Fitness at Thornton Hall Hotel & Spa

Arrive frazzled, leave re-energised thanks to all the fitness-fostering activities on offer at Thornton Hall. Its Health Club has a superb reputation as being one of the finest in the North West.

With bikes, treadmills and cross-trainers, along with weights machines, working out feels less of a chore on the state-of-the-art Technogym equipment. But if you prefer your fitness with friends, there’s a whole alphabet of classes to try, from Absolute Abs to Yin Yoga. Just remember to book in advance.

Not a gym lover? We hear you. Workout in the sunshine with a power-walk to the nearby village of Thornton Hough. Surrounded by picturesque countryside, there’s plenty to see here. A model village designated an Area of Special Landscape Value, it boasts 22 listed buildings.

If golf’s more your bag, a six-minute drive takes you to Heswall Golf Club, a spectacular 18-hole course with panoramic views across the Dee Estuary. Play a round or perfect your game at the club’s extensive facilities including a driving range, two chipping and putting greens and a practice bunker area.

Restaurants & Food at Thornton Hall Hotel & Spa

Relax, unwind, then it’s time to wine and dine, and at Thornton Hall you’re in for a sophisticated treat. Soak up the period features of your sumptuous Victorian surroundings, before heading to the bar or one of the hotel’s restaurants. But which one will you choose to round off your perfectly pampered day?

The Brasserie

Feeling a bit attached to your robe and slippers? You’re in luck. You don’t have to get changed when you’re enjoying brunch, lunch or an afternoon snack at the spa’s own elegant Brasserie. There’s a great atmosphere along with a huge menu of drinks - and not all of them are healthy! Robes can be worn in the Brasserie up until 6pm, but you’ll have to get dressed for dinner.

Lawns Grill

Fancy getting fancy? Thornton Hall’s award-winning restaurant fits the bill. This foodie hang-out is the destination for smart lunches and long, lingering dinners under the twinkling lights of the chandeliers. Period features make a great talking point while you’re getting your starters - there’s a stately fireplace, classical frieze and an exquisite embossed leather ceiling to admire. But what to eat? Something from the Mibrasa grill will go down a treat, but leave room for dessert!

The Lounge

The Lounge nestles in the heart of the hotel and is the most relaxed dining option on offer. Pull up a seat at the bar for your post-pampering g and t, or sink into a comfy seat at an intimate table. Sharing platters from charcuterie to baked camembert and cheese food help keep the mood sociable, or there’s comfort food such as burgers, fish and chips or lobster mac and cheese to enjoy.

The Terrace

Why not enjoy the same, informal Lounge menu al fresco? Tables on the manicured lawns are perfect for hazy summer days, or snuggle up in the cosy covered Terrace with its log burner and soft, fluffy blankets. There’s a cocktail bar, a screen for major events and live music played at weekends.

From the moment we arrived to the time we left the whole team made us feel welcome and relaxed. The front of house team who greeted us were informative regarding the use of the spa, towels, robes, treatments and refreshments. The explanation of the treatment, was thorough down to the safety call should we need it! The spa area's were immaculately clean, well stocked and well signposted. Overall, a fully relaxing stay.

I only really had one niggle with this venue and that was the buffet breakfast! We went towards the end of the time slot, so probably our own fault, but what was left looked like it had been out a long time and was only luke warm at best. The rest of our experience was great! Lovely, clean, comprehensive spa facilities (particularly enjoyed the outdoor hot tub and snow cave!) and friendly staff. Dinner in the evening was delicious. Bedroom was spacious and comfortable. I would definitely recommend!

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Thornton Hall Hotel & Spa do afternoon tea?

Yes it does and there’s no finer way to while away the afternoon. Available every day between 12pm and 4pm, the hotel’s decadent Great Wirral Afternoon Tea is served in the sumptuous surroundings of the Lounge, or on the manicured lawns if the weather’s nice.

Proud winners of the Best Tasting Afternoon Tea Award in 2018, you know you’re in for something truly special. Presented on the finest Royal Crown Derby bone china crockery, they’ve elevated the British treat into an art form.

Feather-light scones, dainty sandwiches and luscious cakes and pastries come as standard. But what if you don’t have a sweet tooth? They’ve thought of that too. The savoury afternoon tea offers a unique twist on the classic, with fish cakes, homemade sausage rolls and cheese scones, washed down with a menu of unusual teas or something blonde and bubbly.

Does Thornton Hall Hotel & Spa have a swimming pool?

It does, and it’s a beauty. Styled upon a Roman bath, there are 20 tranquil metres perfect for unhindered swimming or a leisurely dip. After your swim you can pull up a lounger, or soak your tired muscles in the bubbly water of the indoor spa pool.

What should I pack for Thornton Hall Hotel & Spa?

You’ll need to bring your swimwear for the fabulous spa facilities, and your gym kit if you fancy a workout in the well-equipped gym. Don’t forget your book or a magazine for all that lounging around you’ll be doing. And, if you’re planning on lunch or dinner in the Lawns Grill you’ll need something smart/casual - no shorts or trainers allowed.
