About
The spa town of Buxton is so crammed with Georgian and Victorian architecture, it’s earned itself the nickname the ‘Bath of the Midlands’. And perched elegantly above the town sits the Palace Hotel & Spa. This grand old Victorian retreat makes the perfect base for exploring the town, along with all your Peak District adventures. But it also gives you a luxurious health and leisure club to come home to afterwards, complete with Elemis treatments, a heated pool and a relaxing thermal suite to ease your weary limbs.
From the moment you arrive, the hotel’s imposing Victoriana architecture sets the scene for your elegant Buxton spa break. Built in 1868 by Henry Currey (the same architect behind the town’s famous Devonshire Dome) the Palace was created as a showpiece of the town’s spa boom. Step inside today and the historical charm is still very much in evidence, with high ceilings and period features that hint at the hotel’s grand past. Combined with a warm, welcoming atmosphere, it’s very easy to slip straight into relaxation mode here!
Down in the spa and leisure club you’ll find everything you need to unwind. Chill out in the heated indoor pool, breathe out in the sauna and steam room, or simply stretch out on a lounger. Six tranquil treatment rooms offer indulgent Elemis massages and facials, plus OPI manicures and pedicures for that all-important finishing touch. Afterwards, you can head to the relaxation area for a cheeky post-massage snooze – and wake up feeling brand new.
Known as the gateway to the Peak District, the Palace Hotel & Spa is surrounded by some extraordinary natural splendour, so be sure to bring your walking boots. Head to Buxton Country Park and climb up to Solomon’s Temple, or venture into the surrounding White Peak for scenic hikes. Closer to home, the hotel sits right beside the Pavilion Gardens, made up of 23 acres of paths, lawns and flowerbeds. A little further on, you’ll find the town’s main historical sights – the Buxton Opera House and the Devonshire Dome.
Love to shop? The hotel is also close to the quirky independent and traditional shops that line the Market Place and High Street. But the heart-of-it-all location is only part of this grand old dame’s charm. After a day out, settle into the cosy lounge for a post‑spa drink before heading to the Dovedale restaurant for dinner. And when it’s time to call it a night, the hotel’s 122 bedrooms offer a peaceful, comfortable place to rest your head.

The Palace Hotel is an amazing hotel full of character and nostalgia. We were upgraded to the Wedgewood Suite which was out of this world, very privileged indeed. Elemis facial in the spa was lovely.

We’ve been before and enjoyed it but were blown away by the improvements to the spa area and the treatments were even better than they used to be. I had a lymphatic drainage massage and my partner had a back massage and we both felt like jelly after! Staff were so friendly and helpful. The relaxation room was very nice. The facilities are great, pool, steam room and sauna were great as always - although some hooks would be great poolside for clothes/robes etc. The only downside to the package was the lunch, it was the ‘light lunch’ and the options for the sandwiches weren’t great (maybe just not to our tastes!) would have absolutely upgraded to anything else but again the staff in the bar/restaurant were incredibly helpful and friendly.

Our treatments (two each) and therapists were really good. The pool was fine and not busy but only had upright seating. The sauna was out of order but the small steam room was in use. The only place to relax between treatments and using pool etc. was the relaxation room, which was very pleasant. The light lunch was very average - a bland soup, poorly filled sandwiches with a tired salad and some crisps, but there was no difficulty getting a gluten-free version. Changing rooms could have been a touch cleaner but were spacious and airy. Overall we had a very nice chilled day lifted by the excellence of the treatments.

The spa staff were friendly and helpful both during the booking process and the treatment. The treatment rooms were comfortable and relaxing, and the massages very professional. The leisure area had a good size pool which was great for swimming once you acclimatised to the temperature, and there was also a small sauna and steam room. The hotel is a lovely grand building with decent decoration, and good cleanliness. Unfortunately our booking wasn't initially found by reception even though the Spa knew we were coming! However after a short delay we were able to check-in earlier than expected, and the reception staff were helpful. Dinner was self-service carvery, and the food quality was okay, however there was only one vegetarian option of veg lasagne. The location of the hotel is excellent, you can walk into Buxton town centre in 3mins, and the Opera House and historic Baths are just round the corner. Over-all we enjoyed our break and thought it was good value for money.

It does! And because this is one of Buxton’s most historic hotels, you’ll be sipping and scoffing in style. Served in the airy, light-filled, Conservatory alongside beautiful views of the gardens, your afternoon tea comes on a suitably elegant three-tier stand, with freshly prepared sandwiches, warm scones and dainty cakes.
Does Buxton Crescent Hotel & Spa have a swimming pool?
It does, and it’s a beauty. Guests can take a dip in the stunning 14m indoor pool, complete with historic surroundings that make every swim feel a little bit special.

It sure does. The Palace Hotel & Spa offers 122 bedrooms, each with cosy beds, period charm and everything you need for a comfortable stay. Room categories range from Classic Doubles and Executive Lexx rooms right up to Spacious Suites, giving you plenty of choice.
All rooms come with free Wi‑Fi, tea and coffee‑making facilities, flat‑screen TVs, and ensuite bathrooms, with upgraded room categories offering extra space and enhanced features.
Is the Palace Hotel & Spa accessible?
It is. Although the hotel dates back to 1864, the team works hard to balance its heritage character with modern accessibility. There are ten accessible parking spaces, two accessible bedrooms, along with ramp access at the rear of the building.
However, the pool has ladders to climb into the pool and the ladies changing room and beauty department are upstairs with no lift access.
What are the check-in and check-out times at the Palace Hotel & Spa?
You can check in anytime from 3pm. Hotel checkout is by 10am from Monday to Friday, and by 11am at weekends. Check your booking confirmation for full details.
Where is the Palace Hotel & Spa located?
You’ll find it on the hill above the railway station, set in five acres of gorgeous gardens. Because it’s right in the heart of beautiful Buxton, there’s shopping and sightseeing right on your doorstep. The Pavilion Gardens are just a short stroll away.
What’s the history of the Palace Hotel & Spa?
Want to stay in a little piece of Buxton’s spa history? The Palace Hotel & Spa has been a landmark of the town since 1868. The grand old dame was built during Buxton’s Victorian heyday as a fashionable spa destination, designed by architect Henry Currey, who also worked on the nearby Buxton Crescent.
Over the decades, the Palace has hosted royalty, dignitaries and travellers from around the world, earning a reputation as one of the town’s most iconic buildings. Its striking façade, sweeping staircases and period features are still very much in evidence today – but you’ll also find lots of modern comforts, too.
Is the Palace Hotel & Spa family friendly?
It is. Along with children’s menus, the hotel offers family rooms featuring one double bed, two single beds and a sofa bed – ideal if you’re bringing the little ones. Children are welcome to enjoy the pool (under‑16s must be supervised by an adult), and the only restriction is that under‑16s can’t use the gym.
There’s also plenty nearby to keep families entertained. A must‑see highlight is Poole’s Cavern and Country Park. This impressive limestone cavern is considered one of England’s finest show caves – and you’ll agree when you see those spectacular formations shaped over millions of years!
Is the Palace Hotel & Spa dog-friendly?
Time to pack their little doggy suitcase, because well-behaved pooches are welcome at the Palace Hotel & Spa in double or twin standards and compact double rooms. They can snuggle up next to you in the lounge bar, or sit outside to enjoy the garden.
Does the Palace Hotel & Spa have a golf course?
Fancy a game? While there’s no course on‑site, the Palace Hotel & Spa has partnered with Cavendish Golf Club, an 18‑hole gem that regularly features in the UK’s Top 100 lists. Guests can enjoy 15% off green fees, or 15% off a round at the club’s state‑of‑the‑art indoor golf facility, where you can play virtual versions of world‑famous courses. Just mention you’re staying at the hotel when you book.
