About

Love a stylish stay beside the seaside? We know just the place. Known as the ‘Palace By The Sea’ since it opened in 1864, The Grand Brighton has always been luxurious. But a spectacular multi-million-pound refurbishment has now added new layers of opulence to this iconic seafront hotel. Its wow-factor new look blends heritage glamour with contemporary coastal cool. And completing the transformation is the arrival of the subterranean L.RAPHAEL Beauty Spa & Wellness, giving the five‑star property its most indulgent edge yet.

The slick new retreat is the first UK outpost for the Swiss skincare brand, famous for its patented Oxygen technology and celebrity-favourite Oxy-Treatments. Beyond the age-defying rituals, you can drift between L.RAPHAEL’s hydrotherapy pool and thermal suite before heading to the spa lounge for a finger sandwich or sweet treat. Hit the dedicated manicure and pedicure stations for a high-gloss finish, then take your new look to the relaxation areas where you can lounge in a robe with a refreshing glass of fizz.

Despite the hotel’s name, there’s nothing pompous or pretentious about the place, because the vibe here is effortlessly welcoming. Gone is the old-school chintz, replaced by zingy emerald velvets, bespoke wicker and bedrooms that feel more like high-end coastal apartments. Snag a room with a sea-facing balcony and you’ll find free-standing bathtubs, perfectly positioned for a soak with a view of the English Channel.

But not every bit of Victorian splendour has been erased. With its clotted-cream frontage and intricate fretwork balconies, The Grand Brighton’s facade is still a celebrated masterpiece of Italianate-Victorian architecture. Inside you’ll find the hotel’s original 1860s ‘vertical omnibus’ – the first lift in the UK outside of London. The hotel also boasts a free-standing cantilevered staircase that spirals up seven floors. It’s one of the most Instagrammable spots in the building – and a true feat of Victorian engineering. Prefer pop history? Keep an eye out for the Napoleon Suite, where ABBA famously celebrated their Eurovision win in 1974!

Sitting slap-bang between the Palace Pier and the remains of the old West Pier, The Grand occupies the best spot on the seafront. Wander into The Lanes – a labyrinth of 16th-century alleyways filled with independent jewellers and boutiques. Head to the Royal Pavilion to soak up the history at George IV’s exotic, onion-domed palace. You’re also perfectly placed to take a ride on the British Airways i360 for a bird's-eye view of the Sussex coast.

Back at the hotel, grab a table at Cyan for destination dining – or an obligatory negroni at the spectacular circular bar. Sweet tooth? Settle into the sun-soaked Victoria Terrace for the legendary afternoon tea, voted the best in the city. Just don't miss the bountiful breakfasts in the Empress Suite. Nothing beats tucking into your full English in this stunning, light-filled room, where floor-to-ceiling windows showcase one of the best morning views in Britain.

The Spa & Wellness at The Grand Brighton

Step off Brighton’s bustling promenade and into the hush of the brand‑new L.RAPHAEL Beauty Spa & Wellness. This subterranean hideaway is the standout jewel of the hotel’s £17 million refurbishment. Designed in soothing eggshell blues and creams, the £2.5 million space is the home of prestigious Swiss skincare brand L.RAPHAEL Genève’s very first UK partnership – and it shows in every incredible detail.

What was once the hotel’s basement swimming pool has been completely reimagined as a sophisticated thermal suite. Begin your journey by sinking into the warm, bubbling waters of the hydrotherapy pool and Jacuzzi. Move on to the authentic Swedish sauna or the steam room, then cool off under invigorating experience showers that release an incredible 50 litres of water per minute through wall-mounted jets.

After your circuit through heat and water, drift through to the relaxation lounge, where oversized daybeds and quiet alcoves invite you to stretch out with a healthy green smoothie – or a naughty chilled glass of Champagne!

When it’s time for your treatment, expect a level of expertise that’s both luxurious and results‑driven. L.RAPHAEL is famous for its scientific approach to beauty – and the fabulous facials are a real must-try, to boost your collagen and leave skin looking instantly renewed.

The Gym & Fitness at The Grand Brighton

At The Grand Brighton, even working out feels like a treat! Step into the beautifully refurbished fitness suite and you’ll find free weights and the latest Technogym cardio machines, complete with interactive screens. After your session, thoughtful extras like GHD hair tools keep you looking fresh.

If you prefer to take things outside, you’re in luck – Brighton’s beach is less than a minute away. Cross over Kings Road and you can be jogging along the promenade or dipping your toes in the sea before most people have had their breakfast! Cyclists are well looked after too – the hotel is famously bike‑friendly and can arrange secure storage in the garage.

Beach sports more your style? Head east along the promenade to Yellowave. As the UK’s first permanent sand‑based beach sports centre, it offers six beach volleyball courts you can hire by the hour – perfect for a sunny afternoon with friends.

Restaurants & Food at The Grand Brighton

Indulge your taste for the high life at The Grand Brighton. Whether you’re looking for a post-spa sweet treat, a seafood spectacular, or an award-winning cocktail with a view, you’ll be able to do it all without leaving your hotel.

The Spa Lounge

Not quite ready to take off your robe? At the Spa Lounge, you don’t have to! With a menu full of light bites and sweet treats, this serene space is designed for total decompression. Hydrate with vitamin-rich green smoothies, fresh juices, or locally sourced tea and coffee. Not grapey enough for you? A crisp glass of Champagne or local Sussex sparkling wine is always on hand!

Cyan

Housed in the hotel’s beautifully refurbished right wing, Cyan is a stylish, all-day eatery with a striking cyan-blue colour scheme. The menu celebrates locally sourced seafood, with lobster and sea bass a speciality. Our tip? Don’t miss the signature prawn cocktail – it comes with a Bloody Mary shot on the side!

The best place to soak up the buzz is at the circular central island bar. Look out for the hotel's original 155-year-old marble pillars, then watch The Grand’s expert mixologists craft seasonal cocktails, like the spicy habanero-infused Hoppin' Horse, or the Dame Ruby.

The Victoria Bar & Lounge

For a spot of old-world glamour, head to this plush, emerald-green sanctuary. Whether you’re settling into a velvet armchair for a coffee or a night cap, the atmosphere is pure Victorian elegance. The cocktail menu is a love letter to the hotel’s history – try the 1864 for a taste of the classic, or explore their extensive collection of local Sussex gins.

The Victoria Terrace

Brighton’s most iconic spot for people-watching, this sun-soaked conservatory offers front-row seats to the action on the promenade. This is where you’ll enjoy The Grand’s award-winning afternoon tea, a three-tiered masterpiece of season

Booked for my daughters 26th Birthday, The deal included a one night stay at the Iconic Grand Hotel in beautiful Brighton. The spa is very luxurious, so clean and the relaxation lounge was very Hollywood! It’s a small spa so no pool or hot tub but this wasn’t missed. Complimentary tea/ coffee/ fruit all day. My treatment was with Amy, I will say it was the best massage I’ve ever had & achieved optimum de stress with the added foot massage etc Classic inland room was clean and luxurious though a little tired. GB1 at The Grand - table overlooking the sea front.... service as expected - superb! Our 2 course dinner was 5 star we both chose the Sea Bream, and was cooked & presented beautifully, there were quite a few other choices too. Breakfast was buffet style but 5 star food choices I would definitely book this deal again, fantastic value for money and there is so much to do in Brighton and so many choices of food/drink & culture 😊

I really enjoyed my treatments here but I found the rest of the facilities a bit disappointing. The sauna was nice and hot but there’s no Jacuzzi or pool so once I had enjoyed the sauna for a little while there was really only the sofas to relax on and I prefer a spa with a few more options. The massage was brilliant so I would potentially book that again but not bother with trying to make a day of it.

The relaxation room was a real treat to spend the day in, and with tea, coffee, water a fruit all available to help ourselves we were well looked after (other drinks and snacks could be purchased). We all enjoyed our treatments of massage and facial, with the therapists listening to special requests. Nothing was too much trouble. Our lunch was delicious (although the food was slightly fussy - perhaps a couple of plainer options would be a good addition to the menu?) Overall a lovely day.

Staff and treatments were great but we were surprised at the lack of general spa facilities. There is no swimming pool! Had we known this we probably wouldn't have booked. But the lunch was great and overall we had a good time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does The Grand Brighton serve afternoon tea?

It does, and it’s something extra-special. This multi-award-winning treat has been crowned Brighton’s best afternoon tea for three consecutive years – and you’ll soon see why. Served in the conservatory-style Victoria Terrace, the experience is a masterclass in indulgence, featuring a menu of 30 bespoke loose-leaf tea blends, served in the hotel’s iconic birds and bees bone china.

You’ll start with savouries like warm, flaky sausage rolls and locally sourced quiches, before moving on to fluffy Shipton Mill scones. But the real showstopper is the grand cake trolley – a roaming dessert chariot filled with signature bakes, like the famous orange-infused polenta cake.

If you’re celebrating, you can swap your Earl Grey for a ‘Brighton G&Tea’ featuring local gin, or a glass of Sussex sparkling wine from the nearby Ridgeview estate. And if you can’t manage to finish it all, they give you a cute handbag box as a doggie bag.

Is there a swimming pool at The Grand Brighton?

There isn’t a traditional full‑sized swimming pool at L.RAPHAEL Beauty Spa & Wellness. The hotel used to have one, but the space has since been completely transformed into the spa’s swanky new thermal suite.

The centrepiece is the six‑metre hydrotherapy pool designed for pure relaxation and muscle relief. It sits alongside a bubbling Jacuzzi, invigorating experience showers with different scent and light settings, and a Nordic‑style sauna and aromatic steam room for a proper detox. If you’re feeling brave, there’s also a cold‑water drench shower for that classic post‑sauna zing!

Of course, if you fancy a proper long-distance swim, the ultimate infinity pool is right on your doorstep. Just cross the road and you’re at the water’s edge. Remember to bring your beach shoes – those pebbles are surprisingly painful on delicate tootsies!

Is there accommodation at The Grand Brighton?

There certainly is. Following its multi-million-pound refurbishment in 2025, The Grand offers 205 redesigned rooms that blend the hotel’s Victorian features with a touch of coastal cool. From Cosy Doubles to expansive Feature Suites, over a third of the rooms are south-facing with direct sea views. But even inland-facing rooms come with a refreshing shower, luxury toiletries and complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi.

Because the building is Grade II-listed, no two rooms are exactly the same shape. You might find original feature fireplaces, ornate cornicing, or even a room accessed via the iconic wrought-iron spiral staircase that winds up all seven floors!

Is The Grand Brighton accessible?

Yes, the hotel has wheelchair accessible facilities including lifts to all floors, adapted guest rooms and accessible spa facilities.

What are check-in and check-out times at The Grand Brighton?

Check-in time is at 4pm and check-out time is 11am for overnight guests. If you’re here for a spa package at L.RAPHAEL Beauty Spa & Wellness, arrival times vary. It’s best to check your booking confirmation.

Where is The Grand Brighton located?

You’ll find it on the city’s iconic seafront, right on the bustling promenade. Its central location makes it an ideal base for exploring Brighton – and it’s just a short stroll from Brighton Station, so not too far to drag that little wheelie case.

Step out of the hotel’s historic doors and you are within a five-minute walk of the city’s most famous attractions, including the Palace Pier and the i360 observation tower. Wander inland for ten minutes and you get to the Royal Pavilion with its lush gardens, or get lost in the winding alleyways of The Lanes.

What is the history of The Grand Brighton?

Built in 1864, The Grand was designed by architect John Whichcord Jr. as the "Palace by the Sea," a Victorian masterpiece intended to showcase the height of luxury. It was a marvel of its time, famously featuring the first "vertical booking office" (an elevator) outside of London. Its striking Italianate facade and sweeping spiral staircase quickly made it the premier destination for high society, royalty, and the silver-screen stars of the early 20th century.

The hotel’s storied past took a somber turn in 1984 during the Brighton hotel bombing, an attack on the British Cabinet during the Conservative Party conference. While the event caused significant damage and loss of life, the hotel became a symbol of national resilience. It reopened its doors just two years later following an extensive restoration, standing as a testament to the city’s strength and the hotel's own enduring place in British history.

Today, The Grand remains a glittering landmark on the King’s Road, having undergone multi-million-pound renovations to preserve its emerald-blue balconies and ornate plasterwork. It successfully balances its grand Victorian heritage with a vibrant, modern energy. From the opulent ballroom to the breezy terrace, it continues to serve as Brighton’s most iconic backdrop for glamour, staying true to its original mission as a sanctuary of seaside elegance.

Is The Grand Brighton family-friendly?

While L.RAPHAEL Beauty Spa & Wellness is blissfully adults-only, this fabulous five-star hotel knows how to keep all ages smiling. Children get their own menus in Cyan and the Victoria Lounge and Bar, and can join you for afternoon tea in the Victoria Terrace. And when it’s time for bedtime stories, some rooms can accommodate extra beds, sofa beds or cots.

There’s plenty for them to do nearby. A short stroll brings you to SEA LIFE Brighton, the world’s oldest operating aquarium, where little ones can walk through an underwater tunnel or touch starfish in the rock pools. And for traditional seaside thrills, the Brighton Palace Pier offers everything from a four-storey soft play area for younger kids to fairground rides and arcade games for older thrill-seekers.

Is The Grand Brighton pet-friendly?

It sure is! In fact, your four‑legged friend is just as welcome as you are. Dogs can stay in all room types, and are welcome in the fireplace area of the Victoria Lounge and Bar – just not Cyan, the Albert Room, the Victoria Terrace or the spa.

For £30 per night, your pooch gets their very own pet package, complete with a cosy dog bed, water bowl and tasty treats. And with the fabulously dog-friendly city to sniff and explore, the two of you will have a seaside mini break to remember.

Is there a golf club at The Grand Brighton?

Sorry, it doesn’t. But this city‑centre seafront hotel is still in a great location, whether you’re a serious golfer or just fancy a bit of competitive fun with friends. If you’re after a proper round, head to Hollingbury Park Golf Course – a fantastic local option that welcomes visitors on a pay‑and‑play basis. Set high on the Sussex Downs, this 18‑hole championship course serves up sweeping views across Brighton and the English Channel (along with a few hills to keep things interesting).

If you’re more about fun with friends than a serious round, Brighton’s seafront has you covered. Try Jungle Rumble Adventure Golf on Madeira Drive for the city’s favourite outdoor mini‑golf, or duck into the neon glow of One Under on East Street when the weather turns. Either way, you’re guaranteed a good time – no handicap required.
