About

The fishing village turned tourist mecca of St Ives has no shortage of great places to stay – but this glossy spa hotel is hard to top. Perched on a wooded hillside just a ten-minute stroll from the town, St Ives Harbour Hotel’s sweeping coastal views look just as pretty as a postcard. But the feel-good factor gets turned up even higher at the hotel’s HarSPA, thanks to an airy indoor pool, thermal suite and sundeck – plus a hydrotherapy pool that’s the best seat in town for catching golden-hour views over Porthminster beach.

Opened in 1894 as the Porthminster Hotel, it was originally built to welcome the first wave of Victorian holidaymakers arriving via one of the UK’s most scenic rail routes – the St Ives Bay branch line. That railway heritage remains part of its charm today. The station is just a two-minute wheelie-suitcase-pull away, making it one of the few places where you can watch your train pull onto the platform from your balcony!

Lovingly transformed by Harbour Hotels, the property has become a sleek, four-star retreat that consistently earns rave reviews. Officially crowned ‘Best Seaside Hotel’ by The Sunday Times and the first in town to secure a coveted four-star AA rating, this historic gem has well and truly entered its prime.

Checking in? You’ll find everything is nautical but nice, thanks to pale woods, pops of marine blue. There are 46 uniquely designed rooms filled with luxurious touches, like Nespresso machines for a morning brew with a view. For a truly unique stay, ask for the top-floor rooms, where original giant wooden support beams create a playful layout. In fact, navigating the period building is all part of the charm, especially if you catch a ride in the beautifully-preserved 1930s elevator!

The HarSPA provides the perfect hideaway, whether you are a resident or just visiting for a spa day. You can indulge in a soothing Templespa or signature treatment, then unwind by the heated indoor pool, gazing out to sea from the comfort of your lounger. The spa is a destination in its own right, offering packages that include afternoon tea or a catch-of-the-day lunch served at the elegant Harbour Kitchen.

You’re spoilt for choice for things to do nearby. The hotel sits directly above Porthminster Beach, or head to the town’s maze-like cobbled lanes – it has plenty of boutiques to satisfy your inner shopaholic. Gaze at the art in Tate St Ives or admire the sculptures at the Barbara Hepworth Museum. Further afield, the Godrevy Heritage Coast lies to the east while the iconic Land’s End awaits to the south‑west – the perfect way to add a little coastal adventure to your spa day.

The Spa & Wellness at St Ives Harbour Hotel & Spa

The ultimate seaside sanctuary? The beachfront HarSPA at the St Ives Harbour Hotel. With incredible sea views and that laid‑back‑yet‑luxurious feel, spa experiences here are all about ‘vitamin sea’. Soaking up the charm of the Cornish coast is all part of its appeal.

Step into the warmth of the poolside and let the Atlantic vistas take centre stage. You can take a dip against the resistance jet of the 11m indoor heated pool, or bubble away in the hydrotherapy pool while gazing out across the bay. Detox in the sauna or steam room, then retreat to the expansive outdoor terrace to feel the sun on your face while wrapped in your cosy robe.

Time to make yourself look beach‑ready? Treat yourself to a face or body ritual from Templespa and Elemis Expert, or try a unique local experience like a sea‑salt body exfoliation. Then all that’s left is to lounge on a poolside day bed or head to the relaxation area and let the calm of the Cornish coast linger a little longer.

The Gym & Fitness at St Ives Harbour Hotel & Spa

There’s nothing like a workout with one of the UK’s best beaches as your backdrop. And at St Ives Harbour Hotel & Spa, even the gym comes with a world‑beating view. This sophisticated, compact fitness suite has a selection of cardio machines (treadmills, cross‑trainers and bikes) as well as weight‑resistance machines, free weights and dumbbells.

But it would be a crime not to energise in the fresh air. Step out from the hotel directly onto the South West Coast Path for a brisk jog toward Carbis Bay, or feel the sand between your toes with a power walk along Porthminster Beach – it’s located just a few steps below the hotel.

Water baby? Hire a paddleboard, because your nearest beach is usually mirror‑calm. But if you’re craving waves, Porthmeor Beach on the opposite side of town is the area’s premier surfing destination, where Atlantic swells offer a challenge for all abilities.

Restaurants & Food at St Ives Harbour Hotel & Spa

Harbour Kitchen, Bar & Terrace doesn’t just offer delectable Cornish flavours and creative cocktails. It also gives you a front-row seat to the Atlantic! In the warmer months, the glass doors slide open to the terrace, where glorious views give you the ultimate backdrop for an alfresco lunch served with a glass of local fizz – a delicious Camel Valley Brut.

With a sophisticated, coastal-chic vibe, the décor is a nod to the town’s artistic heritage. Carefully curated local artwork mirrors the textures found in the nearby Tate St Ives. Even the vast floor-to-ceiling windows act like a living gallery wall, framing the turquoise sea just outside.

The menu has a focus on fresh seafood and modern British classics. You can’t go wrong with the Market Fish of the Day, while the afternoon teas (complete with proper Cornish clotted cream, of course) are a legendary local indulgence.

The hotel and spa were beautiful and very accommodating. The spa was clean and well presented. The hotel staff were lovely and very friendly. Nothing was to much trouble: the food and drinks were pricy but you expect to pay more when at a hotel. The pool was warm and a fair size. The Jacuzzi was warm and relaxing. The steam room and sauna were as expected. Overall a lovely spa experience. The only let down were the spa staff. Uninterested, were more interested in being on their phones. Had to ask lots of questions as they just handed us our keys to lockers and that was it.

My wife and I booked the afternoon in the Spa with the Your Best You experience. We both had a very relaxing 60 minute massage, enjoyed the spa facilities and finished with a glass of Prosecco in the bar overlooking St Ives bay. Lovely staff and facilities.

Great space to relax and unwind, lovely little terrace to cool down after using the sauna and steam room. I had the Himalayan Rock massage with Becka, beautiful relaxing treatment expertly carried out. I would highly recommend. Will definitely go back and request Becka for my next treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does St Ives Harbour Hotel & Spa do afternoon tea?

It sure does – well, this is Cornwall, after all. Expect the full works: delicate finger sandwiches, traditional mini cakes, and, of course, those all-important warm scones. Just remember that in Cornwall it’s jam first, then cream.

If you’re feeling extra fancy, you can upgrade to a Champagne Afternoon Tea served with the finest Moet. It’s best enjoyed on the outdoor terrace during the golden hour, when the Atlantic is positively glowing.

Does the St Ives Harbour Hotel & Spa have a swimming pool?

Yes it does, and it’s beautifully relaxing. The HarSPA features a sleek 11-metre heated indoor pool that lets you float in the warmth while gazing through huge windows at the Atlantic Ocean. While it’s not huge, it does let you test your breaststroke against the swimming jet!

Our tip? There are dedicated swim times for the little ones, between 9am and 10am and 3pm and 4pm). If you're looking for a kid-free dip, aim for the hours in between!

Does the St Ives Harbour Hotel & Spa have accommodation?

Yes, and it’s every bit as stylish as the town’s famous art galleries! The hotel features 46 boutique bedrooms, ranging from cosy Singles to indulgent Sea View Suites for the ultimate retreat.

Because of its prime location perched on the hillside, many rooms boast spectacular panoramic views through floor-to-ceiling windows. Don’t miss the in-room binoculars tucked into the window nooks – perfect for spotting the local grey seals in the surf.

Every room is packed with Harbour luxuries, including 400-thread-count Egyptian cotton sheets, a Nespresso machine, and a powerful waterfall shower stocked with premium toiletries. And for the ultimate decadence? You’ll find complimentary decanters of gin waiting for you in every room. We’ll drink to that!

What are the check-in and check-out times at St Ives Harbour Hotel & Spa?

For overnight stays, check-in time is anytime from 3pm and check-out time is by 11am. For full-day, half-day and twilight spa packages, arrival times vary. Best to check your booking confirmation.

Is St Ives Harbour Hotel & Spa family-friendly?

Yes, it is. While children under 18 can’t have a treatment, use the thermal facilities or hit the gym, mini hotel guests can splash around in the swimming pool daily. The times to come (or avoid!) are between 9am and 10am and 3pm to 4pm daily.

Children are well-catered for in the Harbour Kitchen, Bar & Terrace, where they’ll find a menu crafted just for them and filled with family favourites. Family rooms have a double bed in the master bedroom and two single beds or bunk beds in a connected bedroom. A few rooms can accommodate an extra bed or cot, and some are already provided with a sofa bed.

Is St Ives Harbour Hotel & Spa accessible?

Sorry, it isn’t fully accessible. As a historic building perched on a steep hillside, the layout can be a little challenging. The hotel does not have purpose‑built accessible rooms, but some rooms do have walk‑in showers that are accessible by lift. The HarSPA is also not fully wheelchair accessible, and the pool area may be difficult to navigate for guests who cannot manage steps.

Is St Ives Harbour Hotel & Spa dog-friendly?

It certainly is! The St Ives Harbour Hotel & Spa has a selection of dog-friendly rooms available, for £20 per pup, per night. While your furry companion can't join you for a dip in the HarSPA or a formal sit-down dinner in the main restaurant, they are more than welcome to lounge with you in the bar area and on the terrace.

When it’s time for walkies, Porthminster Beach is a doggy paradise in the off-season, though seasonal restrictions apply during the summer months. If you’re here in the summer, Bamaluz Beach is dog-friendly all year round, or hit the South West Coast Path for more adventurous sniffing opportunities.

Does St Ives Harbour Hotel & Spa have a golf course?

Sorry, it doesn’t. But located just a short distance away in Carbis Bay, Tregenna Castle features a spectacular 9-hole, par-3 golf course voted one of the most scenic in the country. It offers a "no fuss" experience with no tee times required – you simply pay at the leisure reception and play.
