About

When it comes to sun, sea and stunning scenery, nothing beats a spa break in Cornwall. But what if all that seaside serenity came wrapped in impeccable design and effortless chic? Welcome to The Idle Rocks in St Mawes, an Edwardian waterfront retreat perched on the harbour’s edge in one of Cornwall’s most picturesque villages. It’s not just beautiful. It’s officially one of the finest hotels on the English coastline, with the highly coveted Michelin Key to prove it. Here, every detail is carefully curated, every view is breathtaking and every stay is infused with laid-back Cornish cool.

Set in the heart of the Roseland Peninsula, The Idle Rocks has been woven into the fabric of St Mawes since 1913. Originally built on the site of the village’s old bakery, it evolved into a luxury retreat in the 1930s, drawing guests with its coastal character and spectacular views. Fast forward to 2013, when current owners David and Karen Richards gave the hotel a meticulous refurbishment, transforming it into a boutique haven of understated elegance that it is today.

In 2025, The Idle Rocks added a whole new layer of indulgence with the launch of Sevan Spa. This serene wellness escape embraces the hotel’s long-standing tradition of relaxation, offering bespoke treatments ranging from signature massages and results-driven facials to entire wellness journeys.

There’s no pool, but who needs one when you have your own outdoor infinity pool (otherwise known as the Atlantic Ocean) on your doorstep? St Mawes’ unique microclimate provides warm temperatures and gentle seas. You can swim even at low tide from the beach and rocks below the hotel, with soft beach towels provided in every room to warm you up again afterwards.

Each one of the 19 bedrooms is individually designed, light and airy, with many boasting private balconies and breathtaking sea views. Gorgeously curated interiors have been designed by Karen Richards to reflect the seaside aesthetic. Expect naïve Cornish artwork, antique French laundry baskets, driftwood sculptures and vintage bathing suits framed like museum pieces, all creating a home-from-home feel with a dash of sophistication.

Beyond the hotel, St Mawes is as pretty as a postcard. Pack your best Breton stripes and sailing shoes, because this stylish seaside town is renowned for its boutique atmosphere and maritime heritage. Often called the St Tropez of Cornwall, thanks to its French-style houses, you can wander through quaint streets lined with independent shops, explore art galleries showcasing local talent, or take a boat trip across the estuary to discover hidden coves and historic castles. Take a coastal hike along the Roseland Peninsula or a spot of paddle boarding or kayaking in crystal-clear waters. And if you’re in the mood for a day trip, nearby Falmouth offers museums and maritime heritage.

But when it’s time to dine, The Idle Rocks delivers a true taste of Cornwall at The Reef Knot Restaurant. The menu is a celebration of sea-to-table cuisine, featuring sustainably caught fish landed daily at St Mawes quay, alongside the finest local produce. Dine inside the stylish restaurant or out on the south-facing, wrap-around terrace, where breathtaking views across the Fal Estuary make every meal a moment to savour.
