About
Shoreditch is a magnet for hipsters and creatives, so it’s no surprise its coolest spa is every bit as unique as the street art outside. Beauty & Melody Spa is tucked inside the five-star Courthouse Hotel Shoreditch, the Grade II listed former magistrates’ court where the Kray twins were once locked up in the cells. But these days it’s more chill-out than lock-up – and the only time you’ll be doing is a blissful hour in the pool and thermal suite!
Once the Old Street Magistrates Court and Police Station, the building was transformed into a luxurious hotel back in 2016, but you’ll still find plenty of playful legal touches throughout. The 128 rooms and suites include the aptly named Magistrate King, while the Judge & Jury restaurant is set in the wood-panelled former courtroom beneath a glass roof. Best of all is the Jailhouse Bar, where you can sip prison-inspired cocktails inside the original holding cells, complete with thick jailhouse doors.
Step downstairs to the spa and the mood switches to calm, with low lighting, clean lines and the odd vibrant pop of colour. The 10m heated pool is the star of the show, with a gushing swan-neck fountain to pummel tight shoulders and Jacuzzi-style bubbles to fizz away the stress. Bag one of the bright purple loungers, then alternate between the sauna and steam room. As the day draws in, the pool takes on a glow that’s pure Shoreditch after dark.
Treatments take place in three tranquil rooms, including a double for couples, where expert therapists tailor every session to you. The cult Japanese Head Spa is the one to try, combining a deep scalp cleanse with a seriously soothing massage that leaves you feeling (and looking) fabulous. Many spa days include a glass of bubbly. But if you fancy making a day of it, head upstairs for lunch, dinner or a traditional afternoon tea.
Planning a jailbreak? Shoreditch is right on your doorstep – and with Old Street station just a few minutes away, your getaway vehicle is the Northern line! The hotel sits opposite the grand old Shoreditch Town Hall, with Hoxton Square and its bars and galleries just behind. Wander towards Shoreditch High Street for vintage finds, or keep going to Brick Lane and Old Spitalfields Market, both around a 15-minute stroll away. But before you make your escape, make sure you head up to the Upper 5th rooftop bar for sweeping views across the London skyline.

The Spa & Wellness at Beauty and Melody Courthouse Spa
Looking for a unique spa treat in the heart of Shoreditch? Beauty & Melody fits the bill! It sits beneath a sleek new wing built alongside the original Edwardian courthouse, so it feels a world away from the wood panelling and stained glass upstairs.
Down here it’s all soft lighting, calm colours and clean lines. The 10m heated pool is ringed with Jacuzzi-style bubbles, so you can switch from a few leisurely lengths to a fizzy soak without leaving the water. The sauna and steam room sit just alongside. And with the pool’s underwater lights to set the mood, this subterranean haven has that glowing, after-dark feel at any time of day.
Look beyond the packages and the treatment menu has plenty more to explore. The hot stone massage uses warm stones to loosen muscles and boost circulation, while the 3-in-1 mini treatment combines a head, neck and shoulder massage, a back massage and a foot and calf massage, perfect if you’ve been pounding the Shoreditch pavements!
The Gym & Fitness at Beauty and Melody Courthouse Spa
Staying overnight? Hotel guests have free access to the gym, alongside the pool, sauna and steam room, so you can squeeze in a workout before breakfast or work off a cocktail or two from the Jailhouse Bar. Kitted out with the latest equipment, it’s tucked away downstairs near the spa.
Prefer to stretch your legs outdoors? Just a short walk west along City Road, Bunhill Fields is a peaceful green oasis where you’ll find the graves of William Blake, John Bunyan and Daniel Defoe. Head north instead and you’ll soon reach the Regent’s Canal, where the towpath winds past colourful narrowboats and waterside cafés, perfect for a brisk walk or a gentle jog.
Craving something more adventurous? Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is a short hop east, where you can swim in the London Aquatics Centre’s Olympic pool or try track cycling at Lee Valley VeloPark. Climbers will love The Castle Climbing Centre in Stoke Newington, set inside a Victorian pumping station that looks just like a medieval castle. Or simply grab a Santander Cycle and explore the city on two wheels.
Restaurants & Food at Beauty and Melody Courthouse Spa
The Judge & Jury restaurant is set in the former courtroom itself, and it’s a real showstopper. Original wood panelling and leather-bound law books line the walls, while a glass roof floods the room with light, so it feels grand without being stuffy. It’s currently open for breakfast, so it’s the perfect place to start the day if you’re staying over – but pop your head round the door if you’re here for a spa day!
For lunch, dinner and drinks with a side of drama (make ours a prison-inspired cocktail!) head to the Jailhouse Bar. Here, five of the original holding cells (including the one that once held the Kray twins) have been turned into cosy drinking dens, complete with heavy jailhouse doors and leather banquettes. Look out for the playful artwork too: the Mona Lisa, Darth Vader and Lady Justice are all behind bars.
Save room for one last drink up on the fifth floor at Upper 5th, the hotel’s rooftop bar. Sip a cocktail as you gaze out over the city, with sweeping views across the London skyline, from the gleaming towers of the City to the rooftops of East London. In the summer months, it really comes into its own with an alfresco barbecue, making it the perfect spot for a long, lazy evening.

How to get to the Spa?
By train: Old Street station is about a five-minute walk away. It’s on the Northern line (Bank branch). Shoreditch High Street and Hoxton stations, both on the London Overground, are each around a 10-minute walk. If you’re arriving by mainline train, Liverpool Street is about 20 minutes on foot, or a short hop by bus or taxi.
By bus: Plenty of buses run along Old Street and nearby Shoreditch High Street, including the 55, which stops close to the hotel.
By car: Central London traffic can be slow, so public transport is usually the easiest option. If you do drive, the postcode for your sat nav is EC1V 9LL. The hotel is within the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) and right on the edge of the Congestion Charge zone, so check which charges apply to your vehicle and route before you set off.
Parking: Parking is very limited in this part of London, so it’s best to contact the hotel ahead of your visit to ask about options. Otherwise, there are public car parks in the surrounding area.

Where is Beauty & Melody Spa at the Courthouse Hotel Shoreditch located?
You’ll find it on Old Street, right opposite the old Shoreditch Town Hall. Look out for the imposing Edwardian Baroque facade, which still bears the original court signs. It’s a five-minute walk to Old Street station and just a short stroll to Hoxton Square, Shoreditch High Street and Brick Lane.
What’s the history of Beauty & Melody Spa at the Courthouse Hotel Shoreditch?
Like your spa days in buildings with a colourful past? You’ll be in your element here. Opened in 1903 as the Old Street Magistrates’ Court and police station, and the court stayed in session right up until 1996, with the police station only closing in 2008!
In 1965, the Kray twins were held in its cells before their first court appearance. Playwright Joe Orton stood accused of stealing library books and George Orwell was briefly locked up here while posing as a tramp. After it closed, the building found fame as a TV filming location for shows including Spooks and Luther. It finally reopened as a five-star hotel in 2016, after a £40m transformation that kept many of its original features. Look down as you cross the foyer and you’ll spot one of the quirkiest: a crack running through the original mosaic floor. Thanks to the building’s Grade II listed status, it can’t be replaced, so it’s very much part of the furniture!
Is Beauty & Melody Spa at the Courthouse Hotel Shoreditch family-friendly?
Hoping for some grown-up relaxation? You’re in luck! The spa is adults only. Families are welcome to stay at the hotel though, and there are family suites available.

It doesn’t, but there’s still plenty of fun to be had! The hotel has its own two-lane bowling alley, Down the Alley, which you can book by the hour. And Shoreditch and the City are home to several crazy golf bars, where you can putt your way around quirky courses with a cocktail in hand.
