About

Looking for a wellness retreat to reset your mind, body and spirit? One that blends cutting-edge science with traditional healing practices to leave you feeling brand new? Whether you’re craving some serious pampering or want to kickstart a healthy lifestyle, you’ll find everything you need at Champneys Tring - the UK’s original (and arguably best-known) health resort.

A health spa since way back in the 1920s when it was opened by visionary naturopath Stanley Lief, Champneys Tring continues to lead the way when it comes to beauty innovations and wellbeing breakthroughs.

Situated in the heart of Hertfordshire’s rolling hills, luxurious yet health-focused wellness nestles against a gorgeous backdrop - some 170 acres of beautiful gardens and a Downton Abbey-esque red brick manor house once owned by the Rothschild family. No wonder it's been a magnet for celebrities over the decades, with famous names such as Naomi Campbell and Brad Pitt both donning the famous Champneys bathrobe in years gone by.

From spa days to longer stays, all-inclusive health retreats at Champneys Tring embody a holistic approach, cramming fitness classes, wellness activities and nutritious food into every stay. The resort has more luxe facilities than you can waft a scented candle at, including the UK's first marine and wellness spa.

From yoga and hiking to tennis and cycling, alongside a packed timetable of 20 classes a day, guests are immersed in a world laser-focused on their wellbeing. But the big draw here has to be the one-of-a-kind spa treatments. Champneys are world leaders when it comes to unique, highly-personalised treatments using both Elemis and the spa’s own signature brand. With massages, wraps and beauty treats and even its own cryotherapy chamber, they’ve elevated feeling good into an art form here.

Just a short journey from London, it’s close enough for a day visit full of decadence. But if you fancy a spa sleepover, you’re in for a treat. With 91 sumptuous rooms, accommodation spans from the historic elegance of the original manor house to the modern luxury of the Garden Wing, which ensures a serene escape along with picturesque views.

Beyond the garden gates there’s lots of things to do. Embark on an adventure along the Grand Union Canal or pay a visit to the National Trust's Ashridge Estate. This enchanting location is renowned for its star turn in the Harry Potter movie series, making it a must-visit for fans and nature enthusiasts alike. Tring itself offers plenty of retail therapy, or the historic Roman city of St Albans is just 15 miles away. A little closer to home, Tring’s Natural History Museum is also well worth a visit.

But why leave all that’s on offer right here at Champneys Tring? A testament to nearly a century of wellness innovation, it offers an authentic spa experience set against the backdrop of an estate with a rich history and lush countryside.

Amazing Spa Day!

My first time at Champneys and I wasn't disappointed. It definitely lives up to its reputation. I found a great deal online via SpaSeekers - booked an Essentials Spa Day. I wanted to treat myself after suffering a traumatic event a few weeks ago. It was definitely needed. From the minute I walked in until the time I left, it was amazing! The venue was clean, staff very helpful, the different areas are easy to find and the food was nice too (very healthy). I didn't book any treatments but enjoyed full use of the facilities - loved the hydropool and the jacuzzi. I was lucky that it was a quiet day and not too busy. All in all a fab day and I'll definitely be returning with the hubster. I feel relaxed, rejuvenated and refreshed. I will sleep like a baby tonight. I highly recommended this place.

We had a lovely evening at Champneys, all the staff were very helpful. We were able to have treatments because we pre-booked them, so I would recommend doing that unless you just want to use the facilities, which there are lots of. Our 3 course dinner was really tasty, we were pleasantly surprised as we had no idea what to expect. We joked it wouldn't be steak and chips, but if you wanted steak and chips you could have had it for a supplement. The food was a very high standard and it all sounded amazing we wanted to have it all. Our treatments were really good too and we were very relaxed by dinner time.

Went to Champneys Tring with my mum for the evening spa. Communication before the evening wasn't very good as we turned up and I hadn't been told we had to book a time for dinner, they managed to fit us in but the lady wasn't very helpful. I also couldn't find out online what time the spa was open until, it would have been good to get an email with more information about what is provided and the facilities. The spa itself was amazing, very large with lots of different areas and it was nice and quiet. Our dinner was also very good, service was a bit slow but the food was lovely. I will definitely be going back.

Booking the spa was very easy. I chose my location what I wanted (afternoon tea) and paid. Received an email almost immediately to confirm. I chose Tring because of it being the flagship Champneys spa. I’ve been to the Ashby De la Zouche one and I enjoyed it with my sisters (there’s 5 of us in total).. Amazing building and very impressive as you walk in (it made up for the 3 hour journey to get there).. However lockers where limited as in room was having maintenance and we ended up sharing lockers which where very very small to start with. The basic spa was good but I thought very limited. Lunch was just as expected healthy and lots of choice. However I was let down with the afternoon tea! The sandwiches were ok, my expecting of afternoon tea was scones, jam, cream, mini cakes and pots of tea etc what we received was cream cheese and jam (the healthy option I’m guessing) and one cake with a coulis... I’m wanted an indulgent afternoon tea but it was a healthy one.

THIS WAS BOOKED AS A CHRISTMAS PRESENT FROM MY SON. WE BOTH THOROUGHLY ENJOYED THE DAY AND CAME HOME FEELING REALLY RELAXED. THE SPA WAS CLEAN AND OUR TREATMENTS RELAXING. AQUA AEROBICS WERE GOOD AND WORKED US HARD. THE LOCKING SYSTEM FOR THE LOCKERS LEAVES A BIT TO BE DESIRED, OTHER THAN THAT IT WAS EXCELLENT AND ALL THE STAFF FRIENDLY AND HELPFUL. FOOD DELICIOUS.

Pros: Beautiful location. Lots of treatments available. We stayed in a twin standard room in the mansion block. A little small but that was no problem to us. The beds are so comfortable. The staff are very friendly and always greeted with a smile. The food is excellent. Lots of healthy choices that are well thought out. Cons: Their computer system is rubbish. It need updating. Check your bill before you leave. It's not the staffs fault but we found it confusing as there were treatments that we both had on the same day written on the bill in different dates and we also found a treatment charged twice. If you want to prebook treatments before you go beware that you are waiting on the phone for ages before you get through and the calls are 7p a minute. I really did enjoy the stay at Champneys and will definitely go again.

Immerse yourself in the 25m indoor heated swimming pool, a haven of gentle warmth and soft lighting. Even on dry land there are heated waterbeds, perfect for a cheeky post-massage nap.

Is Champneys Tring a Champneys’ resort?

Yes it is. Champneys has four resorts - Tring, Forest Mere, Tring and Springs. These are health spas with a laser focus on your health and wellbeing.

Its two luxury spa hotels, Eastwell Manor and Mottram Hall, feature all the mod cons you’d expect from a destination hotel (think elegant interiors, gourmet dining and afternoon tea) along with a Champneys spa.

Is there accommodation at Champneys Tring?

If all that pampering has made you feel sleepy, you’re in luck. Champneys Tring has 91 cosy bedrooms - along with some clever tricks to help you drift off into a blissful slumber. From Standard to Deluxe suite, the rooms are light and airy, while beds come made up in the finest linen - well, only the best for you!

And the full Champneys experience, you can even spritz some spa-scented pillow mist over the bed before slipping in. Bliss!

Where is Champneys Tring located?

Champneys Tring is nestled in the rolling Hertfordshire hills, about an hour by train from London Euston. Close enough to London to be reachable, but far enough away to be peaceful, this idyllic location provides a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, surrounded by lush greenery and fresh air.

What should I bring for a Champneys spa day at Champneys Tring?

Very little, as you’ll be spending most of your day swanning around in your complimentary towelling robe and flip-flops! You’ll obviously need swimwear to wear in the pool and thermal facilities. But it's a good idea to bring some spare swimwear or dry underwear to keep you feeling comfortable when you go for lunch, or if you’re planning on booking into a treatment.

You’ll also need activewear and trainers if you’re going to use the gym or have a class, and a spare pair for outdoors if you fancy a stroll around the grounds. And, if you’re thinking about staying for dinner, you’ll need something smart/casual to wear. Just remember to reserve your table in advance.

Do I get to keep the flip flops provided at Champneys Tring?

Yes you do! Flip flops are provided to all guests and are yours to keep. They’re also anti-slip tested so they’re perfect for the spa and poolside.

Who owns Champneys Tring?

It’s part of the destination spa group Champneys, which is owned by the Purdew family. Founded on the philosophy that health, beauty and wellbeing are inextricably intertwined, its pioneering concepts continue to inspire to this day.

What is the history of Champneys Tring?

Champneys Tring is the original Champneys health farm! Visionary naturopath Stanley Lief bought the stunning estate from the wealthy Rothschild family back in the 1920s. He called it his Nature Cure Resort, and it attracted patients far and wide, drawn by his methods of healthy diet and stress relief (something embraced by wellness practitioners to this day).

While the Champneys name actually comes from Tring’s former estate owner, Ralph de Champneys , Lief sold the resort in the 1950s, after which the property changed hands several times. Finally, in 2002, it found its long-term stewards – the Purdew family.

Already the proud owners of other health resorts like Henlow Grange (acquired in 1981), Springs Health Farm (1990), and Forest Mere (1995), the Purdews envisioned a unified brand. Bringing Champneys Tring under the Champneys banner in 2002, they solidified a remarkable collection of wellness destinations.

Is Champneys Tring accessible?

Yes it is. There are accessible bedrooms, and disabled access with assistance from staff.

Is Champneys Tring family-friendly?

Sorry, it’s not. Champneys Tring is an adult-only destination, for those over the age of 16.

Is Champneys Tring pet-friendly?

Sorry! No pampered pooches allowed, only guide dogs and hearing dogs.

Does Champneys Tring have a golf course?

No, Champneys Tring doesn’t have a golf course, but there’s still plenty to do outdoors. Borrow a bike and go exploring, or take part in guided activities outdoors, from Nordic walking and countryside hikes, to a mindful morning walk around the grounds.

Sporty types can get their fix on the outdoor tennis courts, but if you really can’t live without your clubs, Champneys Mottram Hall offers the chance for keen golfers to enjoy an 18-hole championship course along with incredible spa facilities.
