About
Waking up to the sound of the waves. A dusting of sand on your flip-flops. Morning swims before warming up in a Swedish sauna. If your idea of paradise involves coastal calm and lashings of spa indulgence, then The Alchemist Spa at Woolacombe Bay Hotel is the seaside sanctuary you seek. Drift down the steep, winding hill toward Woolacombe Bay for your first glimpse of the sea – but don’t get lost in the view. Because there, standing just above the waves, is this grand Victorian resort – and the only work you’ll be doing here is working on your wellness.
Perched on one of Devon’s most iconic beaches, this boutique retreat is the epitome of laid-back luxury. Seaside-chic rooms offer views over miles of golden sand, where surfers ride the waves and sunsets paint the sky. But there’s plenty more to stir the senses, from heated indoor and outdoor pools to state-of-the-art fitness facilities and courts for tennis lovers. Tuck into creative cuisine at the hotel’s beachside dining den, The Bay Brasserie. And should the Atlantic mood turn stormy, there’s a retro movie den with luxury sofa seating to cosy-up in.
But if relaxation is the only thing on your itinerary, The Alchemist Spa delivers it by the bucket-and-spade load. This five-bubble retreat blends restorative therapies with a selection of thermal experiences, including a hot tub and herbal steam chamber. Unwind in the sumptuous relaxation suite, bask in a copper bath made for two, or get muddy in the rasul. But in the unlikely event that the heat gets too much, pad along to low-lit treatment rooms where magic-handed therapists will refresh you with rituals from Templespa and Gaia.
Beyond the spa, coastal adventures await. The hotel’s private path leads you straight from suite to sand –, and Woolacombe’s three-mile beach is a dream for surfers, paddle boarders and sun-seekers alike. Take a wild dune walk, explore the hidden coves, or lace up your boots for an exhilarating hike along the South West Coast Path. Venture further to Ilfracombe, with its quirky galleries and Damien Hirst’s famous Verity statue, or head inland to Exmoor, where rolling moorlands and secret woodland trails will immerse you in the beauty of nature.

The Spa & Wellness at The Alchemist Spa at Woolacombe Bay Hotel
With its sand, surf and serenity, a stay at Woolacombe Bay Hotel has all the ingredients for the perfect break. But here’s one more to add to your list – a session in the sumptuous Alchemist Spa, a coastal wellness retreat designed to restore, rejuvenate and relax you.
Wrap yourself in a fluffy robe, then drift toward the heated indoor pool for a leisurely swim or a spot of poolside lounging. Bask in the hot tub, then step into the thermal suite, where the Swedish sauna and herbal steam chamber will unblock pores and soothe the senses.
For the ultimate indulgence, take time for a ritual. Sink into a Templespa or Gaia treatment, or hit the steamy mud rasul. But if you fancy something decadently different, try the copper tub bathing ritual. Inspired by the Japanese tradition of Yuzuyu, there’s room for two of you to have a long soak in natural essential oils.
After your treatment, there’s nothing to do but pad along to the softly-lit relaxation suite. Unwind every muscle on a plush daybed as you sip citrus-infused water and let the coastal calm take over.
The Gym & Fitness at The Alchemist Spa at Woolacombe Bay Hotel
Prefer lunging to lounging? Don’t sweat it. The Woolacombe Bay Hotel is home to the SALT Gymnasia, a boutique fitness space packed with cutting-edge kit from Technogym, Keiser and Versaclimber. Whether you’re lifting, climbing, stretching or sprinting, this gym lets you do it all – and the soundtrack is so good, it might just make your reps feel easier.
Those who don’t like to go it alone can join a SALT Squad class (chargeable, and subject to availability) where you can power through strength training, bootcamps, Pilates or even yoga on the six acres of manicured lawns. If you’re more of a game-set-match type, there’s a beachside tennis court, and a multi-sports court for basketball. You can even try pickleball, the UK’s fastest-growing sport.
Beyond the hotel, Woolacombe is a natural playground for fitness fanatics. Take on the South West Coast Path, a breathtaking clifftop hike. Grab a surfboard and ride the waves at Woolacombe Beach, one of the UK’s best surfing spots. Or simply run barefoot along three miles of golden sand. Who needs a treadmill when you have the Atlantic?
