About

A pampering experience that’s fit for a king (or queen)? You’ll find it here at the Utopia Retreat at Great Fosters.

Nestled in the heart of Surrey, near Windsor, the sumptuous Grade I-listed hotel was built in the 1500s. A fine example of Tudor architecture, it was once Henry VIII’s hunting lodge - but now it offers indulgent experiences designed to make you feel like royalty.

Stroll through 50 acres of grounds and soak up the history - there are listed topiary mazes and sculptures, Saxon-moated gardens and a sundial gifted to the estate by Sir Francis Drake himself. The historical wow-factor continues inside, where antique Flemish tapestries sit alongside oak beams and ornate Jacobean fireplaces.

Royal connections continue off the estate, too, with Windsor and its castle just five miles away. Crammed with boutique shops, Windsor’s a vibrant place for retail therapy or you can take the family to Legoland or Thorpe Park.

With a fantastic choice of bedrooms and historic suites to pick from at Great Fosters, the icing on the cake has to be the Utopia Retreat itself, with three zen-like treatment rooms and rituals designed to energise and rejuvenate you, body and soul.

But the centrepiece of it all is the lovingly refurbished art-deco swimming pool and hot tub, complete with original 1920s bathing boxes. Open during the summer months, chic loungers and attentive butler-style service will make you feel like a real VIP.

The Spa & Wellness at Utopia Retreat at Great Fosters

Revel in a haven of luxury as you embark on the perfect pampering experience at the Utopia Retreat at Great Fosters.

The centrepiece here is the art-deco heated outdoor pool and hot tub, complete with chic loungers and original 1920s bathing boxes. Open from May to October, it makes a glamorous spot for soaking up the sun on hazy summer days.

Cocooned in your soft robe and slippers, there’s butler-style service. So ask for a glass of something blonde and bubbly and a light lunch to help you de-stress and unwind. But it’s not just about living out your Great Gatsby fantasies here, because the Utopia Retreat also has an array of blissful treatments to enjoy.

Signature massages, skin-brightening facials and beautifying finishing touches can be found in zen-like treatment rooms. With Templespa providing the Mediterranean-infused body rituals and OPI polish for your nails, there’s everything to pamper and preen you from top to toe.

Or for something extra special, head to the al fresco treatment tent offering treatments for two with views across the moat.

The Gym & Fitness at Utopia Retreat at Great Fosters

You’ve de-stressed at the Utopia Retreat. Now it’s time to nurture your physical health with a spot of exercise, and Great Fosters has just the thing.

With so many acres of lush grounds, exercise is all about fresh air and the great outdoors here. Get energetic on the pretty outdoor tennis courts. You can borrow rackets and balls, or bring your own if you prefer.

Take to one of the trim trails, on a power walk past the piggery, beehives and kitchen garden. Prefer to travel by two-wheels? There are some distinguished-looking Great Fosters bicycles to hire.

Although there’s no gym on-site, the hotel has negotiated a preferential at nearby Egham Orbit. Less than a five-minute drive away, there’s a large fitness centre, and more group exercise sessions than you can shake a dumbbell at, including Zumba, spinning and Body Pump.

Restaurants & Food at Utopia Retreat at Great Fosters

Great Fosters is a great location if you’re here on an occasion when only the best will do. Its Tudor Pass restaurant is truly something extra-special, boasting an elegant menu, a top head chef and a shiny Michelin star.

This intimate gastronomic experience has just seven tables and sumptuous decor (think rich tapestries, velvet seating and oak beams). With the air of an exclusive dining club, it feels special even before you’ve had your starter.

Open from Wednesday to Sunday for both lunch and dinner, each four or seven-course tasting menu takes you on a culinary voyage, with dishes presented in person by the chef or one of his team.

Don’t fancy something fancy? The more informal (yet still two-AA rosette-award winning) Estate Grill has vaulted ceiling and open fires, and opens out onto the terraces for alfresco dining in the summer. Open for lunch and dinner every day, the cuisine here is sublime too, with much of it cooked on the Josper grill.

The hotel and staff were exceptional. The grounds are stunning and the house and spa décor gorgeous. Absolutely loved our room! Really recommended the garden suites! The concierge, main reception, cleaners and waiters were all amazingly friendly, professional and great at their jobs. The spa itself was gorgeous, however the drinks/service of spa reception could have been slightly better if I’m being completely honest. Only area that lacked the standards of every other aspect. Massage was amazingly relaxing and loved all the pools. Would love to see a cold pool and shared sauna/steam rooms to add to the luxury. Food at reflections, both lunch and dinner was superb! Will definitely be back. Customer service from Sam Elliott was of the highest standard and he went above and beyond to ensure we had a great stay. So impressed! Overall had the most amazing time and will be back! Thank you x

We enjoyed our day stay by the pool and afternoon tea. The pool was so nice and warm the Jacuzzi was like a hot bath, it was heaven. We had lots of cocktails and it felt like a tropical island. The staff are so nice and always so attentive if we needed anything. Beautiful place and peaceful retreat. Thank you to all the staff and all the spa therapists.

We got engaged at Great Fosters last weekend. We were very fortunate to experience staying in a four-poster bed at their signature suite. Dinner at The Tudor Room was incredible. Spa treatments resulted in us feeling refreshed and relaxed.

This made a great choice for a surprise romantic getaway for my wife’s anniversary. A unique listed Tudor country Manor House, Michelin-starred dining, it had the wow-factor, and then some. The food in the Estate grill is also excellent if you are unable to reserve a table in the sought-after Tudor Pass. The lounges are sumptuously furnished and decorated to a high standard as are the bedrooms. The gardens are worth a wander. The hotel offers spa treatments (my wife said her massage was amazing) and the outdoor heated pool and hot tub was a lovely touch.
