Tasty Spa Treat

A Manchester tart is something that Manchester residents have been enjoying for as long as they can remember, and with a delicious combination of pastry, custard, fruity jam and coconut it’s possibly the perfect sweet treat to go with your cup of tea after a hard day. But would you have a Manchester Tart facial?

The experts at Macdonald Manchester Hotel and Spa seem to think that custard could well be as good for your skin as it is for your taste buds, and have concocted a delicious-sounding facial based on the contents of the delicacy, which launches in July.

The team at the developed the bespoke facial using a blend of custard, coconut and cherries, designed to give spa-goers a new treatment to try as well as show the hotel’s pride in its home city.

The hour long facial, which costs £45 and will launch in July, includes custard, coconut and cherries, is made up from apple custard – which is high in free radical busting vitamins A and C, which help to keep skin healthy. Coconut is the moisturising ingredient, used in lots of beauty treatments already, and cherries are great for removing dead skin cells and pepping up dull looking skin.

Sounds great, if a little bit sickly!

Are you Sun Cream Aware?

Are you Sun Cream Aware?

Are you Sun Cream Aware?

Yes, I know we didn’t think we’d need to worry about the sun this year, but at last it’s summertime! Time to dig out that bottle of SPF30 from last year? No…

We all know we’re supposed to apply sun cream, but did you know that it goes out of date within a year, and so that bottle you bought for your holiday last summer is actually worse than useless? Most sun protection products won’t be any good at blocking out UV if you’ve had them for 12 months. A recent consumer survey by Escentual.com revealed that not many people realise this; a frightening 74.3% of people would pack last year’s leftover sun cream if they were going abroad for a summer trip.

Escentual.com beauty editor Emma Leslie says; “Most sun care products are marked 12M, which means that the manufacturer recommends they are only used for up to twelve months after purchase.”

Our advice, and that of the experts, is to make sure you buy new sun cream every summer, and don’t risk your health with out of date sun protection!

Ask Spa Goddess Sarah – “I just want my nails done!”

“I just want my nails done!”

“I just want my nails done!”

The world of nails is expanding all the time and it can be daunting if you want to get your nails looking good but you really don’t know what to ask for. I had this question from Melinda in Newark.

“I have short, easy to break nails, and I really want to wear polish, but I work in a job where I just seem to be chipping my polish within a day and I get bored with reapplying it all the time. Professional manicures look great for a day or two but then the polish is chipping badly, no matter how pretty it looks when it’s first put on, and I’m so frustrated. I just want to have pretty nails that don’t break, split or have the polish chip off them all the time and nothing I do seems to help.

What do I need to ask for if I have a professional manicure? I’m a bit nervous of salons, and I wouldn’t be able to work with long nail, but is there a way of making my short nails stronger and chip-resistant – and what should I ask for?”

Firstly, Melinda I definitely know how that feels. I have really terrible nails, and although I adore that just-painted feeling, it never lasts. My nails flake and split too.

There are a few things you could try. If you want to try artificial nails, you could opt for gel nails. These aren’t as long and talon-like as some of the acrylic nails that you see, they are generally meant to look more natural than acrylics which (in my opinion) are more for people who are into nail art, and who use their nails as a canvas for designs and bling.

Gels MUST be applied by a professional, and always get advice from the experts before you go ahead as it’s possible that the gels can weaken your existing nails due to the way they’re applied, which involves filing the natural nail down. They can look really good, and they’re certainly tough. The only downside is that once you start with them, you’ll find you have to keep having them filled in as the nail grows out. You also need them removed by a professional. It’s a good idea if you have the time, money and inclination to make repeat appointments with your local spa or salon. I’ve had a gel manicure before and it didn’t suit me, but many women have them regularly and swear by them.

If the idea of a false nail or potential damage to already soft nails isn’t appealing, the gel polish manicure is another possibility? These often go under the names GELeration, CND Shellac, Gelish, and OPI Gelcolour. Just like a normal manicure, your nails will be filed and cleaned, then you choose a colour…a special gel polish which is applied and then ‘cured’ under a UV lamp for a minute or two, resulting in a rock hard manicure that’s designed to last two to three weeks. Even with my nails, and the pounding they get, I had a GELeration manicure and it lasted two whole weeks. Again, they should be soaked off by a professional using acetone remover, and that’s not kind to your nails, but you can redress the damage with nail and cuticle oils.

The latest addition to the long-lasting manicure set is the Vinylux polish from CND. I’m trying that at the moment and although it’s supposed to last a week, I’m three days in as I type and it’s slightly chipped. It’s still wearable though, and much more durable than standard polish which would last a day or so. Vinylux doesn’t help strengthen the nails like a gel polish cured with UV, but it’s an improvement. At the moment it’s only available from salons but if it takes off, it will probably hit the high street soon. I hope that helps!

Essential Bridal Beauty Boosts

Essential Bridal Beauty Boosts

Essential Bridal Beauty Boosts

Have you started getting the wedding invites for summer yet? Or are you excitedly planning the last details of your summer wedding? You’ve probably thought of what you’re going to do with your hair, the dress is sorted and the flowers arranged in advance, but what about your beauty treatments?

You need to plan ahead when you’re arranging the big day, so make sure you’ve got the following beauty essentials planned and booked!

Facial:

It’s time for your close up! That face is going to be photographed so many times on the big day; you want to make sure you put your best face forward, if you know what I mean. Book yourself in for your favourite facial before the wedding, and a word of warning; don’t leave this part of the planning until the day before the ceremony, or you could end up with a breakout in the wedding photos. A few days to a week before the ceremony should be OK, unless you’ve got problem skin, in which case you could think about having a series of treatments in the months leading up to the wedding.

Body scrub:

A definite must for summer weddings if you’re wearing a strapless gown or dress that shows your arm. It’s also essential if you’re thinking of having a spray tan, you’ll get much better results with a spray or other fake tan if you have smooth skin to begin with. Try it at home with a salt scrub or body brush, or book in for a spa treatment and have it done in luxury…

Waxing:

For super smooth hair-free skin, which is what you want your new husband to find under the dress on the wedding night, book a waxing a week or so before the big day.
Manicure: Your hands will be on show during the ceremony and afterwards at the reception, as you flash the wedding band for photo-calls. Get a pristine pedicure a few days in advance and you’ll have pretty nails to match the sparkles.

Make-up:

There’s a reason why wedding make up services are so popular – it’s the one day you want to get that eyeliner flick perfect or wear a foundation that actually matches your skin tone properly! You could ask in department stores for a make-up tutorial, get some advice from the girls in the spa, or even have a make-up lesson in a salon, whichever you fancy. On the day, you can usually book make-up artists to come along to your home and make sure you look the part for the photos.

Couple time:

You mean there’s a groom, too? If you and your intended are feeling a bit stressed with all the planning and organising, melt all the pre-nuptial tension away with a spa day for two? Make sure you pick one with a massage included, and relax….

Spa Days for Fathers

Spa Days for Fathers

Spa Days for Fathers

If a spa day isn’t the first thing you think of when it gets to Father’s Day, maybe you haven’t had a chance to peruse the lots of brilliant Father’s Day deals we’ve got this year?

The spa day has definitely developed a masculine appeal with days designed to make the most spa-resistant father feel as if he’s doing something he can tell the boys about. Manly massages, gym access, swimming and saunas appeal to men everywhere, and if dad’s been feeling a bit stressed, he’d probably love to have the knots expertly removed from his shoulders with a professional massage that’s designed to do just that.

You could be sneaky and book a Father and Daughter double act spa day with golf – one of you gets to use the golf course and the other gets to choose a treatment. That’s really making the most of your father-daughter bonding time, isn’t it? Some spa days for the boys include a stress-busting glass of wine for the lucky man too.

Who needs garden centre vouchers and DIY tools when you can indulge the first man in your life with a day he’ll really appreciate?

Seven Day Nail Polish – bring it on!

Seven Day Nail Polish – bring it on!

Seven Day Nail Polish – bring it on!

If you’re like me and you love having pretty nails but don’t seem to have the time to keep a conventional manicure looking salon-perfect for more than – oh, five minutes – this one’s for you.

Shellac, GELeration and long-lasting spa manicures have been around for a few years now, which has given women with busy lives a great way of keeping their nails looking fabulous without resorting to artificial gels and acrylics, both of which aren’t that great for your natural nails.

The two week manicures are great – I have had them myself and love them – but they still require a trip to a spa or salon for both application and removal, which is time out of your day, and more expense of course. It’s lovely having a professional manicure, and I have to confess I can never quite get my right hand looking as neat as my left, but manicures are unfortunately one of those things that tends to get shoved down my list of priorities when I’m busy.

So I squealed with delight when I heard that CND Shellac is bringing out a brand new seven day polish, which has the look and feel of a professionally applied long lasting Shellac polish but without the need to make an appointment, sit with your hands under a UV lamp or visit the salon to have the polish soaked off in acetone (you didn’t peel yours off, did you? I couldn’t possibly condone that at all…)

Anyway, if your eyes lit up like mine did at that news, the new polish is called Vinylux and it’s out now. It costs less than £10 and it’s available in over 60 shades. The colour hardens more as it’s exposed to natural light, so you simply apply your favourite colour, add the special top coat and it dries in less than ten minutes. At the moment it’s only available to buy from salons, although you can also find some of the trial sets on eBay and Amazon, but it is designed to be a home-use product so watch this space, the chances are there will be other online beauty retailers selling it before too long.

I can’t wait to try it – I love having well looked after nails but when you’re a writer and spend all day tap tapping on a keyboard, normal ‘hard-wearing’ polishes just don’t cut it. I’ve already ordered a trial set so I’ll let you know how it goes…

The boys have to spa!

The boys have to spa!

The boys have to spa!

Next time your favourite moisturiser seems a little bit depleted or your concealer disappears, don’t blame the kids or think that you’re going mad. It’s probably your other half!

Despite the recession, prestige skincare products are proving very popular with the male of the species, and figures are showing that they are no longer too shy to buy their own, with men’s skincare products seeing a rise in sales last year.

The most popular items on a man’s skincare shopping list are predictable; after shave is number one on the list followed by moisturiser, cleanser, hygiene products and then exfoliating products.

Londoners seem more concerned for their appearance than men elsewhere in the UK, with sales of advanced and expensive skincare higher in the capital than anywhere else in the country. Those City boys obviously like to look and smell good!

It seems that the men are just the same as women when it comes to their favourite brands, too with trusted experts like Clarins and Clinique proving to be really popular, like men only brands such as Lab Series.

A perfect introduction for men who want to take care of their skin and feel great too is a men’s spa day. How about the Men’s MOT at Bannatyne’s Spa in Millbank? Choose a 55 minute treatment and spend all day in the spa…all the treatments on this menu are massage-based but you can still wave the spa facial menu under his nose!

Or you could splash out and go for a Men’s Top to Toe Spa Day ay Champneys Springs – complete with a grooming treatment, a massage and full use of the spa facilities. If that doesn’t convert a man to the joys of grooming and spa days, nothing will!

National Smile Month

National Smile Month

National Smile Month

Did you know that from 20th May to 20th June 2013 is National Smile Month?

It’s an event organised by the British Dental Foundation which has been going since 1976, and the point of the campaign is to get us all to take more care of our teeth.

Do you brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, avoid sugary foods and drinks and see your dentist regularly (as regularly as they recommend?) I have to confess that I’m a bit smug when it comes to dental health, although I do have fillings – ouch.

I couldn’t possibly forget to brush my teeth twice every day, it would feel all wrong.
I’m not a massive fan of sweet things – although I do have the occasional craving for old style rhubarb and custards.

I also go to the dentist regularly, sitting in the waiting room like a condemned woman every time, convinced that a sensitive patch on one tooth means I’ll have to have something done. Thankfully I usually walk out intervention free and I have to put my spell of having a filling every time I went down to an over-zealous dentist.

I’ve never quite got the hang of flossing though…

Did you know that:

• There’s evidence to suggest dementia could be caused in part by poor oral health?
• Gum disease has been linked to high blood pressure in pregnancy?
• Severe gum disease may even cause oral cancer?

That’s three very good reasons to look after your teeth as far as I’m concerned. You can take part in the campaign yourself if you want to by registering for ‘Smileys’ – the official symbol of the event. Then, you can organise an event yourself or just take part by making an effort to follow the three steps, and share the campaign via Twitter, Pinterest and Facebook to get as many people involved as possible.

Oh, and SMILE!

Summer Spa Beauty

Summer Spa Beauty

Summer Spa Beauty

It’s that time of the year again, where spas seem to be falling over themselves to come up with ever more topical, seasonal and in some cases downright unusual ideas to tempt us all in for a spa day.

UK spas seem to have gone mad for the strawberries this year. There’s nothing I like more than real British strawberries, in season. They remind me of when I was very young and living in very close proximity to a ‘Pick Your Own’ strawberry field, which was abandoned for not having enough yield to be profitable. But that field did still produce a heck of a lot of strawberries, and all the kids in the village would gravitate towards that place in the summer armed with plastic ice cream tubs their mothers had given them, and gorge themselves on free fruit. To this day, nothing beats the taste of a warm, freshly picked strawberry.

You can indulge your strawberry love with a Strawberries and Cream Spa day at the Malvern Spa, where you’ll experience a delectable Strawberry Cream Salt Scrub, where you can also enjoy a strawberry and clotted cream dessert with your lunch.

Another strawberry loving spa is the Summer Razul package at Bryn Meadows, where the Strawberry cream Salt Scrub is joined by a delicious afternoon tea – with strawberries of course!

The new packages on offer at the lovely Owl House in Diseworth are decidedly fragrant. Their new offering includes four sumptuous signature body rituals, English Rose, Lavender Crush, Rosemary Herb Garden and Citrus Grove, all perfectly balanced rituals that will leave you smelling and feeling totally amazing. I want to try all four, and I’m dropping hints like nobody’s business if anybody is listening!

If you just fancy a spot of high tea with a spa treatment thrown in, the Spa at Witney lakes resort in the Cotswolds is the archetypal summer spa destination. You can have a lovely treatment and a classic English cream tea, and spend four hours in the spa, just getting away from it all.

Summer treat, anyone?
