About

Dreaming of tempting treatments, bubbling hot tubs and decadent afternoon teas? Turn your self-care fantasies into reality with a spa retreat to Hellaby Hall Hotel. Nestled in the picturesque countryside just outside Rotherham, yet only a short drive from buzzing Sheffield and Doncaster, you can easily lose a weekend wrapped in its romantic charms.

With curb appeal aplenty, this easy-on-the-eye Jacobean manor house dates back to the 17th century. But although you’ll find history and heritage at every turn, Hellaby Hall Hotel’s 89 rooms and suites are full of contemporary amenities. Check into a luxurious suite in the original Grade II-listed house, lie back on your four-poster bed and gaze out on those breathtaking views.

Just when you thought you couldn’t relax even more, it’s time to be pampered. A short tiptoe away from the main house takes you to Hellaby Hall’s well-equipped health and leisure centre. Called Bodyscene, its indoor pool is generously sized at 20m and flanked by sauna, steam and spa pool. But the jewel in the crown is the Fretwell Spa. At this haven within a haven you can enjoy Elemis rituals from four tranquil treatment rooms, or just hide away in an outdoor hot tub in the zen-like spa garden.

Besides the spa, there’s a well-equipped gym, fitness studio and an alphabet of classes from Aquafit to Zumba. If that’s not enough to keep you busy, the attractions of Rotherham, Sheffield and Doncaster are on your doorstep. Shop til you drop at Meadowhall Shopping Centre, spot the animals at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, or practise your skating at Ice Sheffield. Closer to home, Clifton Park and Museum in Rotherham has parks, gardens, rides and games for a great day out.

But when you’ve finished exploring for the day, decadent fine dining at Hellaby Hall Hotel waits. Settle in for an aperitif at the cosy bar then sample a sizzling steak from the grill at the Carnelly Restaurant before you drift off to bed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Hellaby Hall Hotel serve afternoon tea?

It does, and it’s a great way to add some elegance to your spa day. Served with a flourish every day from 12pm until 5pm, afternoon tea takes place in the lounge, restaurant or out on the terrace overlooking the landscaped gardens if the weather’s playing ball.

A harmonious blend of classic and contemporary flavours, this not-to-be-missed treat includes tasty savouries, decadent cakes, warm scones and dinky sandwiches, freshly made each day by talented pastry chefs. Why not upgrade to a Prosecco to make your afternoon sparkle?

Is there a swimming pool at Hellaby Hall Hotel?

There is and, at 20m by 10m, it’s one of the largest private heated indoor swimming pools in Yorkshire. Found in the hotel’s health club, Bodyscene, you’ll also find a steam room, sauna and plunge pool to enjoy, poolside.

Is there accommodation at Hellaby Hall Hotel?

Hellaby Hall Hotel has 89 stylish bedrooms, including Standard, Executive, Family and Accessible rooms, plus the luxurious four-poster Fretwell Suite. The original bedrooms in the Grade-II house have been updated with modern bathrooms, all whilst keeping the character and charm of the original building.

Can’t choose between Standard and Executive? Standard rooms have either a double bed or two single beds with TV, hairdryer, tea and coffee making facilities. They either have a walk in shower or a bath shower. Executive rooms are all tastefully decorated and have complimentary Wi-Fi.

What are check-in and check-out times at Hellaby Hall Hotel?

Check-in time is at 3pm and check-out time is 11am for overnight guests. The time you book into the spa at Hellaby Hall Hotel depends on your package, so please check your booking before arrival.

Is Hellaby Hall Hotel accessible?

Yes it is. There are two accessible rooms. These were newly refurbished in 2019 and feature large doors and walk-in shower en-suites.

Where is Hellaby Hall Hotel?

Hellaby Hall Hotel can be found in the charming village of Hellaby, in the district of Rotherham in South Yorkshire. Hellaby has a rich history, with records dating back to the Domesday Book of 1086. The village is surrounded by beautiful countryside, offering plenty of opportunities for walking and cycling.

You’re also just six miles from Rotherham, 11 miles from Doncaster and 12 miles from Sheffield, perfect for shopping at Meadowhall, visiting the animals at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, or skating at Ice Sheffield.

What is the history of Hellaby Hall Hotel?

Completed in 1692, the Hall was designed in the Jacobean style for rich merchant Ralph Fretwell, the man who lends his name to the Fretwell Spa. After changing hands over the years it was bought in 1918 by Cliff Carnelly, the Hall’s last resident. Carnelly moved out in 1976, and a fire in 1980 destroyed much of the building’s interior. It lay derelict until 1995, when it reopened as a hotel.

Is Hellaby Hall Hotel family-friendly?

The hotel is fabulously family-friendly with four Standard family rooms consisting of two double beds and two Barn Conversion family rooms which can sleep up to six. There’s a children’s menu packed with family favourites and plenty of attractions nearby, with the Tropical Butterfly House, Gulliver’s Kingdom and Yorkshire Wildlife Park all within a 12-mile drive.

While children under the age of 16 can’t use the Fretwell Spa or have treatments, they can splash about in the 20m swimming pool at the Bodyscene, the hotel’s well-equipped health club.

Is Hellaby Hall Hotel pet-friendly?

Sorry, no furry companions allowed (except for guide dogs).

Is there a golf club at Hellaby Hall Hotel?

Love to pamper and play? While there’s no golf course on-site, the 18-hole, par 71 Sitwell Park is just five miles away in Rotherham. Designed by Dr Alister Mackenzie, who helped create the Augusta National, you’ll find its sloping fairways, elevated greens and fast undulating putts are a tricky challenge for any golfer. A handicap is required to play here, and there’s a dress code - no jeans, tracksuits or trainers.
