Well, what a year it’s been for UK spas. There have been some grand openings, some re-launches and fabulous new facilities…not to mention treatments to die for.
At the beginning of the year it seemed that we were all about anything quintessentially English. A crop of ‘English cream tea’ spa days and afternoon tea deals was introduced to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee, and there are still plenty of deals to be had if you want a bit of vintage style with your spa day. The London Marriott County Hall Spa & Hotel has a lovely Cream Tea Spa Treat for two from just £37.50 per person.
Talking of the London Marriott, I managed to get over there early this year and it was amazing. The views are to die for, the location is perfect and the massage I had was heaven. The masseur was a fully-trained physio so not only did he administer a perfect de-stressing Decleor massage, but he de-knotted all the muscles in my neck and shoulders. I swear I grew an inch in height after that afternoon!
Celebrities have been making the most of spas this year – the new crop of celebrity spa lovers includes this year’s heroes, Team GB. The Football Squad attracted controversy for their all-expenses paid trip to Champneys Springs in Leicestershire before the London 2012 Olympics kicked off. The British Women’s Football Team also spent time refreshing and gearing up for the event at Champneys before heading to the official launch of the Olympic kit in Loughborough.
Also loving a bit of Champneys were the boys from Made in Chelsea who headed off to Champneys Tring in November. Sam Cussins, Stevie Johnson and Andy Jordan tried the Extreme Boot Camp and Kriotherapy – neither of which are for the faint-hearted!
One of the summer trends sparked by the Olypmics was the craze for nail art. Seen on athletes from all over the world, and also championed by Beyonce and Rihanna, funky nail art has really taken off this year. You can try one of the gorgeous new shades and textures (leather look is the big thing for 2012/13) or funk it up with Minx Nails - available at quite a few UK spas, including Ragdale Hall and Dove Spas.
Great new treatments introduced in some of our spas include the brand new range of ‘spa journeys’ from La Sultane de Saba, the exotic Moroccan inspired range. The range was trialled in Greenwoods Hotel and Spa in Stock, Essex, this year and the spa was the first in the UK to get the opportunity to sample the scrumptious products.
Champneys Tring announced that it was going to be offering ‘Fertility Breaks’ for couples undergoing IVF. Working with world renowned IVF practitioner Mr Mohamed Taranissi, the breaks are designed to support fertility treatments.
Lifehouse Hotel and Spa in Thorpe-le-Soken also underwent some massive changes, swapping its entire treatment range from Babor to Espa after being re-launched in September. Lifehouse is now offering more corporate and wellness packages, as well as launching a fantastic new Recovery Breaks for people suffering or recovering from cancer.
Ragdale Hall opened a brand new ‘Pavillion’ relaxation area, designed by interior designer Liz Millington, and featuring comfy sofas, outdoor decking and loungers, plus lovely views over the Thermal Suite. The boutique has also been updated to give spa overs yet another chance for retail therapy!
Coming up in 2013? Well we have the refurbished De Vere Mottram Hall to look forward to, with the £5.5million upgrade including posh new bedrooms, and an outdoor thermal village due to open in early 2013. The new spa will include a Brechelbath, a dry heat experience a bit like a sauna with the aroma of aromas of fir twigs, branches and cones.
Ragdale Hall is branching out into short and sweet spa treatments, opening an area dedicated for express treatments that’s separate from the main spa.
We’ll bring you all the latest news and offers in 2013…
