When you’re thinking of idyllic places to go for a break, the Lake District is just about perfect. Not only is it utterly gorgeous, with its famous scenic views, amazing country walks, and of course the majestic lakes, but the Lake District spas and hotels are something else; not only do you benefit from the tranquillity of a spa and all that goes with it, but you can lose yourself in the beauty of your surroundings and marvel at the sheer spectacle of it.
The Lakes have always been popular as a setting for novels, and in fact the brilliant ‘Dearest Rose’ by Rowan Coleman was set in a fictional Cumbrian village last year. The novel has won awards for Best Epic Romantic Novel 2013, Festival of Romance Best Romantic Read 2012, and has also been shortlisted for the RNA Romantic Novel of the Year 2013, and it’s a fantastic read, although I won’t ruin it for you by telling you the plot.
The Lakes do provide a very picturesque backdrop to a story about a feisty woman escaping from a difficult life with her daughter, and Rowan’s descriptions of the scenery just add to the atmosphere of the book. It would be hard to imagine the story working anywhere else in the same way…and the novel would be the perfect accompaniment to a stay in a Lake District spa. I’d be surprised if the book isn’t turned into a film, too.
The North Lakes Hotel is the perfect place for a time out, not too far from the wilds of the Lake District or the shopping of Penrith. You can pop in and enjoy a delicious ESPA treatment or just soak up the serenity of a spa day, and still be able to get out and explore the fells and hills if you fancy getting off of the loungers and getting active.
Another beautiful spa hotel in the Lake District is Armathwaite Hall in Keswick. Full to the brim with everything you could possibly want from a spa, this fully equipped spa is set in 400 acres of beautiful parkland, located right near Bassenthwaite Lake and Skiddaw Mountain. As well as getting full marks for being incredibly picturesque, there are treatments on offer here that you might not find in many other spas, such as comfort zone and Terrake. As well as all the spa facilities including a hot tub with views over the landscaped gardens…
Windermere is home to another spa with added views; the Macdonald Old England Hotel and Spa. This magnificent hotel has arguably one of the best spots on the Lake and some of the best treatments too, with a full menu of Elemis loveliness to choose from. There’s a stylish restaurant, amazing views and grounds, and a relaxation room to sink into if all the chilling out gets too much for you.
More views of Lake Windermere are on offer at the Burnside Hotel at Bowness-on-Windermere. This gorgeous retreat is just ten minutes’ walk from the village of Bowness, blessed with views to die for and all the facilities you could possibly need for a relaxing spa break. The treatments are provided by celeb-favourite Dermalogica so you can be pampered in style.
If you’re looking for a perfect combination of spa time and gorgeous location, head to the Lakes.
