About

Famous for its bucket and spade seaside towns and a certain reality TV show, you may not immediately associate Essex with exclusive country retreats. But we think this hidden gem is going to change your mind. Surrounded by rural splendour and nestled in its own glorious grounds, the exquisite Greenwoods Hotel & Spa feels so far removed from the hustle and bustle, it’s hard to believe the bright lights of London are just 40 miles away.

Located just outside the charming south Essex village of Stock, this elegant spa hotel will tick all your pampering boxes. Your home for the day (and night, if you’re lucky) is a lovingly-restored 17th century manor house. But although much of its historic character remains intact (think dark wood panelling and sweeping staircases), contemporary design touches and artful lighting add a sprinkling of glitz and glamour.

Indulgence is elevated to an art form here. There are beautifully landscaped gardens to meander, cosy nooks to chill out in, a lavish lounge bar for afternoon teas and fine dining to savour in AA-Rosette winning Ellis’s restaurant. But they’ve saved their most luxurious features for the sumptuous spa.

The star of the show, Greenwoods Hotel’s’ sumptuous spa features a 20-metre indoor lap pool, thermal suite and quiet relaxation areas for those who like to unwind in total serenity. A menu of indulgent Elemis rituals await you in ten sumptuous treatment rooms, while a well-equipped gym and fitness classes will help you work up an appetite for lunch.

Nearby, you can visit the shops and landmarks of Chelmsford and Brentwood, and you’re just a short train journey from Central London. If you’d prefer to visit the seaside, iconic resorts such as Southend-on-Sea and Canvey Island are within easy reach, and of course the idyllic rural countryside is a must-see.

But our guess is you won’t be able to tear yourself away from all that’s on offer at Greenwoods Hotel. Stop the world and get off for the day at the incredible spa, but why end your treat there? Overnight stays are always delightful, thanks to 39 comfortable bedrooms crammed with a whole host of luxe features.

The Spa & Wellness at Greenwoods Hotel & Spa

When it comes to R&R, nothing beats checking into a luxury spa for a day. And at Greenwoods Hotel’s temple of tranquility, everything has been designed to pamper, preen and polish you to perfection.

Your journey of delight begins in the delightfully warm poolside area, stretched out on a sumptuous lounger. Cocooned in the snuggly comfort of your robe it’s the perfect place to read a book while light floods in from the windows.

Suitably relaxed, take a reviving dip in the inviting 20 metres of azure waters, then clear the impurities out in the sauna, breathe deeply in the steam room and bubble your troubles away in the Jacuzzi.

Keep the bliss going with a treatment. Results-driven Elemis facials and beauty treats are there to rejuvenate your skin and your joie de vivre. This pioneering British skincare brand combines natural active ingredients with cutting-edge technology for some of the most effective anti-ageing solutions in the UK.

Special occasion on the horizon? Head to the nail salon for manicures, pedicures or IBD gel treatments, before winding the day off with a visit to the relaxation area. Snuggle into a comfortable lounger in this haven within a haven, while mood lighting helps you drift even deeper into contentment.

The Gym & Fitness at Greenwoods Hotel & Spa

Like to stay in shape as you spa? You’re in luck at Greenwoods. The hotel boasts one of the most upmarket gyms in the whole of Essex! All guests, whether they’re here on a spa day or staying overnight, can enjoy complimentary use of the state-of-the-art fitness suite (although there may be a fee for some studio classes).

So what’s on offer for fitness fanatics? There’s a gym that’s recently been refurbished with all the latest Life Fitness equipment. Each piece of cardio kit has screens to entertain you while you exercise along with features guaranteed to find you the perfect workout, no matter what you feel like doing. Don’t know your bench press from your barbell? Friendly staff are always on hand to show you the ropes.

If you prefer your fitness with friends, try a class. Get your zen on with yoga, focus on your core in Legs, Bums & Tums or try something new like Powerhoop or Insanity. It could be the start of a brand new you!

Not a gym lover? We hear you. Work out in the sunshine with a power walk on the lawn. The gardens are full of beautiful flora and fauna, so why not take a morning stroll before breakfast and see what little hidden treasures you can find? For a longer ramble, the idyllic village of Stock with its iconic windmill is well worth exploring and has endless routes to stroll or cycle.

If golf’s more your bag, Crondon Park Golf Club is just a mile away from the hotel. Set in the beautiful valley of Crondon with stunning views across the Essex countryside, this challenging championship golf course has many tricky water features, and you can just pay and play.

Restaurants & Food at Greenwoods Hotel & Spa

You’ve relaxed in the spa and pampered with a treatment. But food is every bit as good for the soul, and at Greenwoods Hotel you’re in for a sophisticated treat. So where should you head to wine, dine and unwind post-treatment?

The Lounge Bar

Whatever you do, make time for a tipple in a squashy armchair beside the crackling log fire in the showpiece Lounge. With its stunning chandeliers and grand décor, you’ll feel like Lord and Lady of the manor! Warm and inviting, it’s the perfect place to sip, scoff and socialise whether that’s with an extravagant afternoon tea, or something from the extensive bar menu full of comfort food, spirits, champagne and wine.

Ellis’s Restaurant

So good it's been awarded with a Rosette from the AA, the hotel’s restaurant is named after Richard Adam Ellis, a previous owner of Greenwoods Hotel and an active member of the local community. With large windows that allow the afternoon sun to pour in, this foodie hang-out is the destination for smart lunches and long, lingering dinners. Our tip? Try the melt-in-the-mouth goat’s cheese bon bons, served with red onion chutney and crostini.

I was very pleased with my visit and thought that the staff were particularly friendly and helpful. I was very impressed by the menu and food and the room was really nice. It was a disappointment though to find that we could only access the spa from 2:00pm on the day we arrived until 11:00am the following morning which seemed an unnecessarily short time.

This is my third visit to this spa. The treatments and staff were as great as usual. The ambience of Greenwoods I love. I must say that the pool area was far to busy on this visit. I did not feel relaxed as no beds or chairs available , to many people in the pool and spa areas. We usually visit this time of year and have never experienced it so chaotic.

I took my mum and my daughter for a Spa day. We had an amazing day, Chloe did our treatments and was very good! Fully recommend her. Our only disappointment was the pool was too cold to swim in. When we left the spa and mentioned this it appears they were waiting for a part that would heat the pool. Would liked to have been told pre arrival or even as we checked in. We would have rescheduled as this was a highlight for us.

With seasonal themes throughout the year and vegan and vegetarian options galore, expect three tiers groaning with goodies. But will you choose a cup of something warm and aromatic to wash it down, or go for something altogether more blond and bubbly?

Does Greenwoods Hotel & Spa have a swimming pool?

It does, and it’s a beauty. With tasteful lighting and flanked by comfy loungers, the 20m indoor pool is warm and inviting, plus there’s a sauna, steam room and hot tub to relax in after your invigorating swim.

Does Greenwoods Hotel & Spa have accommodation?

All rooms have TVs and luxurious beds to ease you into a blissful night’s sleep, but that’s where the similarities end because each one is a unique blend of the modern and traditional.

Rooms in the manor side of the hotel (the original 17th century building) boast a more eclectic, colourful style, whilst the classic side sticks to a grey, chic design. For extra luxury, Premier rooms are equipped with spa baths and marble bathrooms.

What are the check-in and check-out times at Greenwoods Hotel & Spa?

For overnight stays, you can check in to Greenwoods Hotel & Spa at 2pm, and check out at 11am on your day of departure. The hotel doesn’t offer any early check-ins or late check-outs and you can only use the spa facilities from 2pm check-in until 11am checkout. Here on a day spa package? No, there’s not a dress code as such as the hotel wants you to feel comfortable and completely at home. That said, people do generally opt for smart-casual in the restaurant. You’re welcome to wear your robes in the spa, but you do need to be dressed in public areas of the hotel including the restaurant and lounge.

What do I need to pack for my spa day Greenwoods Hotel & Spa?

Make sure you bring your booking confirmation and some money or a credit card to pay for any extra drinks or food not included in your package. In terms of clothing, bring your swimwear, gymwear and maybe a water bottle if you plan to do a work out or take part in a class.
