About

Thought nothing could beat the honey-hued villages and rolling hills of the Cotswolds for sheer relaxation? What about enjoying all that, and being pampered in one of its most prestigious properties at the same time?

Set amid 90 acres of stunning Cotswold countryside, yet just a short distance from the centre of Cheltenham, the idyllic Ellenborough Park has everything you need for days and stays of pure indulgence.

A rambling retreat made up of golden-stoned properties scattered around a manor house that dates back to Tudor times, this classy country house escape was once the home of the Earl of Ellenborough. Now it’s an elegant blend of period features with artful, contemporary touches - like a stunning glass wall providing spectacular views into the Tudor Great Hall beyond.

The world-famous Cheltenham Racecourse is within easy reach from here - in fact, the hotel overlooks the final furlongs and has its own private track to get to the course. As you might expect, there are more than a few nods to its equine neighbours - nothing can beat a G and T (made with Ellenborough Park’s own gin) in its fabulously relaxed Horse Box Brasserie, for instance.

Shopping in Cheltenham is a must for fans of retail therapy. There are picturesque walks to be enjoyed in nearby Pittville Park, and if you’re a culture vulture be sure to visit both The Wilson and the Holst Birthplace Museum. And of course, exploring the Cotswolds is always special.

But our guess is, you won’t want to tear yourself away from all that’s on offer at Ellenborough Park. Stroll the grounds, take a dip in the outdoor pool, heated year-round to a luxurious 30℃, or indulge in a soul-soothing treatment in the cosy and intimate indoor spa.

Days of decadence are sublime at Ellenborough Park, of course, but overnight stays are even more exquisite. You can unwind in style in one of the hotel’s 61 sumptuous rooms brimming with country house character, before heading down to dinner under the warm glow of the glittering chandeliers in the wood-panelled dining room.

The Spa & Wellness at Ellenborough Park

Such an exquisite hotel deserves a spa that’s just as luxurious, and this idyllic haven doesn’t disappoint. This tranquil oasis has a stunning Indian-theme, a stylish nod to Ellenborough Park’s former owner - the Earl of Ellenborough, who was once Governor General of the subcontinent.

Cosy and intimate, this space encourages you to stop, take a breath and indulge yourself with a little me-time.

Your journey to rejuvenation begins inside, at the jacuzzi pool. Could there be anything better than slipping off your snuggly robe and sliding into toasty, bubbly water as you catch up with your nearest and dearest? We don’t think so!

Flit between the sauna, steam room and sensation showers, then recline, book in hand, in the Kama relaxation room, before your restorative treatment commences. There are six tranquil treatment rooms here, complete with a couple’s room, where you can enjoy a whole host of body-beautifying, soul-soothing and age-defying rituals.

To round off your day, pad in your slippers to the outdoor pool. Heated to 3O luxurious degrees all year-round, it’s made to be enjoyed in any kind of weather. But on lazy summer days there’s nothing better than sunning yourself from the comfort of your lounger.

The Gym & Fitness at Ellenborough Park

On a fitness mission? A trip to Ellenborough Park will keep you feeling motivated. Situated on the ground floor of Woodland Court, the gym boasts treadmills, a cross trainer and bikes to help you reach your cardio goals, plus weights and exercise mats for whole-body workouts.

If the gym’s not your style, 90 acres of stunning grounds are there to be strolled, power-walked or jogged. Or, if you’re feeling more adventurous, the hotel can organise a number of country pursuits, from fly fishing and archery to husky driving. Extra charges apply, but it’s a great way to socialise and get active in the fresh air.

If you’re keen to get exploring the beautiful Cotswolds hills on the hotel’s doorstep, you don’t even need to pack your walking boots. Just head to the boot room, filled with row upon row of Dubarry boots and wax jackets to borrow - they’re really thought of everything!

Restaurants & Food at Ellenborough Park

If all that unwinding has worked up an appetite, at Ellenborough Park you won’t go hungry - or thirsty - for long. Some chic dining spaces await you, from the relaxed and casual to something rather more fancy. But however you choose to round off your pampering day, make time to enjoy a G&T before dinner. Not to be missed, they’re made with the hotel’s very own gin.

Horse Box Brasserie

With all the warm and welcoming feel of a gastro pub in the country, this laid-back bar and restaurant has squishy seats to sink into and a menu filled with classic British flavours. Warning: if you come here for lunch, you might just find yourself whiling away the whole afternoon!

Restaurant

Arguably one of Cheltenham's best restaurants, the wood-panelled 15th-century Restaurant is your setting for sumptuous breakfast banquets and glittering dinners. Soak up the historic surroundings filled with period touches and enjoy impeccable service as you dine on a menu filled with seasonal produce and flavours. But while it may be grand, the Restaurant is not stuffy. Laid-back luxury is the order of the day here.

Al fresco carriages

Time for a sundowner? Head to the South Lawn for a cocktail under the atmospheric festoon lighting. The stars of the show here have to be the quirky dining carriages. Open throughout the warmer months, these charming wooden pods showcase beautiful panoramic views of Cheltenham Racecourse and Cleeve Hill.

The hotel was beautiful surroundings amazing. Spa was rather small. There were probably about 12 visitors to the spa and only 5 beds to sit on round the Jacuzzi area. Lunch was included not much of a selection for meat eaters, lots of veggie options. Our lunch over ran though so we didn’t have time to enjoy it before the first two of us had to go off for treatments . My massage wasn’t as firm as I would like I did ask but would describe it as soft - medium . I don’t like to complain but we were slightly disappointed but overall had a nice time.

The service from start to finish in the spa was amazing. The treatments were fabulous. The venue stunning, just a shame it's a short walk outside to the outdoor heated pool, as you scurry past e.g. gardening staff and other guests walking by. I have mixed reviews about the horse box restaurant (feedback via trip advisor). The food was yummy but the timing available was a little disappointing and service varied dependent on waiter.

Set in beautiful grounds. Quiet location, Spa facilities perfect for a couple or a small group of friends. Massage thoroughly relaxing. Afternoon tea was first class. Had a cozy snug room to sit and enjoy the afternoon tea, this was intimate. The room was up a few winding stone steps which over looked a Grand Hall. Theme was very historical. Well worth the package deal I paid.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Ellenborough Park have afternoon tea?

Nothing beats a classic afternoon tea, and the quintessentially British pastime oozes indulgence at Ellenborough Park. You can sip and socialise everyday from 2pm to 4.30pm, in the sumptuous surroundings of the Great Hall, a setting which really has the wow-factor thanks to high ceilings, chandeliers, stained glass windows, wood-panelling and the occasional harpist providing the refined soundtrack.

Take your pick of teas, displayed with a flourish in a case that’s brought to your table. Then get stuck into three tiers crammed with sandwiches and savouries, handmade sweet treats and scones fresh from the oven. It’s so filling they’ll even bring you a doggy bag so you can take the leftovers home.

If you’re celebrating a special occasion (or even if you’re not), you can raise a glass of bubbly to give the afternoon some extra sparkle. Or for truly decadent affairs, why not choose something from the cocktail list? Our suggestion? The Lady Ellenborough - a crisp blend of gin, cucumber and Prosecco.

Does Ellenborough Park have a swimming pool?

It does. The 15m pool may be outside, but it’s kept at a toasty 30℃ so it won’t take you ages to get your shoulders wet, even when it’s chilly outside. Perfect your front crawl with some invigorating laps, then lay back and sun yourself (weather permitting!) on one of the comfy loungers.

Where is Ellenborough Park?

Situated on the edge of the Cotswolds and nestled in the picturesque countryside this part of the UK is famous for, Ellenborough Park is a stone’s throw from Cheltenham Racecourse, home of the famous racing festival. So close, in fact, that it overlooks the final furlongs and has its own private track to the course! The equine connection continues at the hotel, where four suites are named after winning racehorses.

Is there a dress code at Ellenborough Park?

You can leave your finest black tie and ball gown at home because smart/casual is the order of the day in the fine dining restaurant, while the Horse Box Brasserie is relaxed and casual.

What are the rooms like at Ellenborough Park?

In a word, fabulous! Spread over four locations in the grounds, all 61 bedrooms have a country house feel, with larger rooms boasting four-poster beds and roll-top baths. While all are bespoke in terms of design, they come complete with luxurious touches, such as Nespresso machines and en-suites crammed with swish toiletries.

What time is check-in and check-out at Ellenborough Park?

Check-in is at 3pm and check-out is 11am.

Is there disabled access at Ellenborough Park?

Yes it is. Although the main house of Ellenborough Park is more than 500 years old and packed with period features, there are four accessible bedrooms suitable for wheelchair users, all situated in the more contemporary out buildings. These bedrooms have en-suite facilities and entry level showers with handrails fitted throughout. In the spa, treatment rooms can be accessed by the lift from the ground floor.

Is Ellenborough Park family friendly?

Yes, very! Although you must be over 16 to enjoy the indoor spa facilities and treatments, there’s so much to do here they won’t get bored.

Children can swim in the outdoor pool, take part in a year-round scavenger hunt, borrow board games, or take part in the extra activities laid on just for them throughout the school holidays. The hotel can make you up a picnic to eat on the lawns, or what about their own afternoon tea, complete with ham, cheese and jam sandwiches washed down with a milkshake?

When it’s time for their bedtime stories, cots are provided for free, there are extra beds suitable for children up to the age of 11, or interconnecting rooms to give teens their own space.

Is Ellenborough Park dog-friendly?

It’s more than just friendly, because dogs are treated like VIPs at Ellenborough Park. They even have their own pet spa for a wash, shampoo and brush-up after long walks in the countryside.

There are 12 dog-friendly rooms, with four that have an enclosed garden. If you eat in the Horse Box there’s even a doggie menu, where pets can enjoy a Bark Burger, washed down with a Bark Brew with a Doggy Lollipop for dessert.

Does Ellenborough Park have a golf course?

No, there’s no golf course at Ellenborough Park, but that doesn’t mean you should leave your clubs at home. Just a five-minute drive from the hotel you’ll find Cleeve Hill Golf Course, boasting fantastic Cotswolds views and challenges for golfers of all abilities. Perfect if you love to pamper and putt.
