Dreaming of lakeside walks, tempting treatments and hunkering down beside the crackling log fires of an enchanting Lancashire hideaway? Turn your fantasy into reality with a visit to Macdonald Kilhey Court. Nestled in 11 acres of gorgeous grounds yet just a stone’s throw from Wigan, you can easily lose a weekend wrapped in its charms.

Built in 1884 by a Wigan brewer as a present for his beloved, this Victorian country house has a very romantic backstory. But although you’ll find history and heritage at every turn, Kilhey Court’s 62 rooms and suites are full of contemporary comforts. Check into a Standard or Deluxe room, pamper yourself with Elemis toiletries and gaze out on glorious views.

Just when you thought you couldn’t relax even more, it’s time to be pampered. There’s no pool, thermal or wet facilities here, just five tempting treatment rooms dedicated to spoiling you with high-end organic Ishga rituals, using natural seaweed products from the Hebrides.

But when you’ve finished exploring for the day, the Macdonald Kilhey Court awaits. Settle in for an aperitif at the Burns Bar, or dine by the cosy fire in the lounge. Then all that’s left is to drift off to your supremely comfortable bed.

With its abundance of natural beauty, the epic Lancashire landscape is a natural tonic to those looking to unwind. But Macdonald Kilhey Court offers more ways to revive you than just its deeply dramatic location.

Although there are no pools, thermal or wet facilities, you will find treatment rooms that offer a selection of Ishga spa treatments designed to beautify, rejuvenate or relax you.

These seaweed treatments involve artful applications of vitamin-enriched Scottish seaweed combined with water from a natural spring situated on the beautiful Hebridean Isle of Lewis. But will you choose a deeply hydrating facial or a soothing massage?

The Gym & Fitness at Macdonald Kilhey Court Hotel

There’s no gym or leisure facilities at Macdonald Kilhey Court but that doesn’t mean you won’t be keeping fit, particularly if you’re a fan of walking, hiking or jogging in the fresh air.

Nestled at the bottom of its landscaped gardens, just beyond the trees, you’ll find Worthington Lakes, a series of three scenic reservoirs that make the perfect place to get your steps up.

Prefer a more adventurous way to feel the burn? A seven-minute drive takes you to Haigh Woodland Park, just over two miles away from Kilhey Court. With 11 obstacles to complete and an exhilarating 40-metre zip wire finale, this thrilling high ropes gets you closer to nature. No head for heights? Sadly a low ropes course means you’ve got no get-out clause.

Lovely day at this spa. Pool was small but this didn’t matter as it was quiet. All the facilities were good. The treatments were wonderful and the masseuse was clearly experienced. Staff went out of their way to accommodate us when we asked about changing the afternoon tea. They swapped it for a light lunch. The food was delicious and cooked to perfection. Can only recommend Kilhey Court however, I learnt today that it’s closing to the public on 9th September until further notice.

The therapist, Katie, was amazing! She was incredibly professional and personable. I would highly recommend a deep tissue massage given by her. The hotel staff were extremely friendly & helpful. The receptionist came to our room to inform us that lunch was ready. She could just have phoned! She escorted back to the bar area..above and beyond. The lovely lady who served breakfast (blond hair in an updo) was pleasant & friendly. The break was for my friends leaving do and the only complaint would be the cost of the Prosecco, £38 per bottle! Breakfast was super & the setting & surroundings of the hotel are beautiful.
