About

A Nordic heat and ice experience. A saltwater vitality pool with a secluded, starlit cave. An entire suite dedicated solely to aqua massage. If you’re seeking spa nirvana, you’ll find it in the sumptuous Hoar Cross Hall. One of our most prestigious properties, a trip to this tranquil temple in Staffordshire is more than just a luxurious experience. It’s a wellness journey from which you’ll emerge feeling reborn.

More of a spa resort than a hotel, even the approach is impressive. Set in 43 acres of postcard-pretty manicured grounds, you’ll sweep up a long, tree-lined driveway past Italian gardens and ancient woodlands. With its Needwood Forest location, it’s hard not to feel like you’ve been squirrelled away, far from the hustle and bustle.

Adorned with elevated chimneys and contrasting loft gables, this Grade-II listed stately home has kerb appeal in abundance. But you won’t find any stuffiness between these Elizabethan-style walls. The interior has been treated to a £14 million upgrade with modern art and sculptures providing a contemporary contrast to the plentiful period features. The result? A truly beautiful building that strikes just the right balance between completely comfortable and supremely luxurious.

And then there’s the spa itself. One of Europe’s largest and most state-of-the-art, it boasts 85,000 square metres dedicated to spoiling you. From crystal clear hydrotherapy and saltwater pools, to 42 (yes, 42!) treatment rooms and endless relaxation lounges, this underground wonderland is so huge you get a handy map to help you explore. No wonder it has a mantlepiece groaning with awards.

When you're not being pampered with stand-out treatments from Elemis and VOYA, you’ll find a wealth of ways to fill your time. In fact, from tennis, archery and golf to woodland walks, gym and fitness classes, you may struggle to pack everything into one visit.

But if you do find the time to venture out, Hoar Cross Hall lies just 11 miles from the stunning city of Lichfield with its three-spired mediaeval cathedral and inspiring National Memorial Arboretum. Bustling Burton-on-Trent is closer still at just nine miles away, for retail therapy at The Octagon and Coopers Square Shopping Centre. Thrill-seeker? Alton Towers is just 20 miles away.

But why leave the comfort of your robe at Hoar Cross Hall? With 104 sumptuous bedrooms, some scrumptious spaces to eat, drink and be merry, and even an AA-rosette winning dining room, this country house estate has everything you need for a truly special spa day - or longer, if you’re lucky.

The Spa & Wellness at Hoar Cross Hall Spa Hotel

Forget spas with just one treatment room and a solitary sauna the size of a broom cupboard. Crammed with unique features you won’t find anywhere else in the world, Hoar Cross Hall is a subterranean Atlantis designed exclusively for escapism.

A labyrinth with surprises around every corner, it’s so big you need a map to navigate. Here’s a rundown of a few of the highlights:

Saltwater vitality pool

The star of the show isn’t just a swimming pool. It’s a starlit sanctuary complete with its own cave and a massaging volcano! At 26m it’s long enough for laps, or just use the pool to fully unwind as you float in the natural mineral water. When you’ve finished your dip, lie back and relax on the heated loungers, designed to promote blood flow.

Nordic Heat and Ice Suite

The Scandinavians know a thing or two about how to spa, and this Nordic-inspired haven promises to leave you as rebalanced and reset as a trip to the Icelandic hot springs. Begin your transformative journey with a dip in the hot tub, head for a steamy encounter in the sauna, or go for an invigorating experience in the salt steam room. A quick blast with an ice-cold shower and you can retreat to the soothing embrace of the aromatherapy room. And, breathe!

Hydrotherapy pools

This watery trio promises more than mere relaxation - it's your route to total wellbeing. Dive into wellness at the atmospherically-lit hydrotherapy pool, and let the warm water soothe you while it rejuvenates your skin. Elevate your relaxation in the blissful hot tub, as the 37 to 38°C water releases endorphins to transform your mental and physical state. Then target aches with lion's head massage jets, designed to boost blood circulation and encourage lymphatic drainage.

Aqua massage

This hydrotherapy haven targets every ache, with powerful jets for your neck down to a soothing Kneipp foot massage for your tootsies. Whether you're looking to invigorate with an icy plunge pool or deeply relax in hot water zones, alternating temperatures and pressures are tailored to rebalance body and soul.

Detox Centre

Had a few too many late nights recently? Revive at the healing Detox Centre. Sweat it out at the saunarium, sauna and steam room, then have a blast in the experience showers. It's never been so easy to cleanse, calm and care for your body.

Relaxation spaces

There are so many places to unwind you won’t know where to start. The light and airy Atrium beckons you for a coffee while you read your book. The Sanctum features blissful hanging chair pods, while the Relax Zone has inviting double day beds. But best of all has to be the Snooze Room, with its water beds, tranquil lighting and canopy of twinkling fairy lights.

Tranquil treatment rooms

Seeking radiance? A glorious selection of face and body rituals, carried out by highly trained spa therapists, use products by Elemis and VOYA for long-lasting results.

You can even hire bikes and cycle along the scenic paths of this expansive estate. Needwood Forest and the tranquil Italian Garden make for a visually rewarding ride.

Restaurants & Food at Hoar Cross Hall Spa Hotel

Time to undo all that work you’ve been doing in the gym in some of Hoar Cross Hall’s most scrumptious spaces - but believe us, it’s oh-so worth it. The culinary experiences on offer here are so good they’ll tempt even the fussiest of foodies. In fact, many of the vegetables and herbs are grown within the grounds - they even produce their own honey.

The Library

Decadent afternoon teas are served in the Library - and what a fitting backdrop it makes for the elegant treat. Sip, scoff and socialise in style with views of the formal gardens. Just don’t miss the ornate gold mirror over the fireplace - apparently it was the inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice Through the Looking-Glass’. There’s even two secret bookcase doorways!

The Ballroom

For an extra special start and end to your day, try the bountiful breakfasts and three-course dinners at the AA-Rosette-awarded Ballroom restaurant. Originally called ‘The Drawing Room’, this room really has the wow-factor, so look out for the Grade-II listed William Morris wallpaper, the Bodley ‘wedding cake’ ceiling, grand chandeliers and views over the southern formal gardens.

Henry’s

Found near to the internal entrance to the spa, this laid-back dining space is the place to go for informal brunches and lunches. Stone-baked pizzas, healthy smoothies and salad bowls are the order of the day here.

Hugo’s

Here on a spa day and wondering where you’ll have lunch? Head to Hugo’s, the spa’s day-time restaurant - you can wear your spa robes so you don’t even have to interrupt your day of relaxation. With a great mix of salads to something a bit more indulgent, you’ll find hearty fare amid the alfalfa sprouts.

The Long Gallery

Time for a tipple? Make a toast to your newfound wellness with a menu of expertly-mixed cocktails served in the warm and inviting Long Gallery. With its sumptuous oak-panelling, twinkling chandeliers and richly-decorated ceiling, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time to Tudor days. Go for a classic Singapore Sling or try a house creation beautifully presented with dramatic theatre, unique flavours and striking decorations.

This is my second time here with an overnight stay, spa day and treatment. Bedrooms are lovely, and beds super comfy, food is excellent, and lots of options in the spa area. It is just a shame we were not advised about the new pool construction. This resulted in us not being able to enjoy the salt water spa due to constant drilling noise, which I think also made the other rooms busier and harder to find beds. Loved my treatment though, and would definitely recommend the frangipani body wrapšŸ¤— I have reduced my condition and overall satisfaction ratings due to the construction work disturbance and not being forewarned.

Lovely venue, and staff and meal in Hugoā€™s restaurant were fabulous. The experience could have been improved by better communication, an information email prior to the visit with time of the meal and a menu, what to expect from your visit, and the need to take your bank card if you want to use your wrist band for any additional expenses. Also that the coffee is not available after 9pm, as I was advised at 8.45pm during my visit. Overall a lovely experience which could be better with some minor tweaks.

I've been to Hoar Cross Hall 3 times before but this is my first one since before COVID. I have high expectations due to past experience and I'm pleased to say I enjoyed it as much as I have before. The range of facilities are excellent and there's enough to fill your day and get your monies worth. Did struggle a little bit to get a bed by the pools even as a solo person in the morning as it was quite busy but this eased off in the afternoon. I instead hid myself away in the sanctum which is one of my favourite areas as is always quieter. Couple of negatives but didn't ruin the day. Check in in the morning was a bit slow as I got there a bit later at 9am. The hot tub in one of the pool areas was closed. And my massage wasn't great sadly and was much firmer than I would have liked, even when I asked for it to be softer this was only taken on board for a short time. But overall I had a wonderful day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Hoar Cross Hall serve afternoon tea?

It does. And is there a better way to end a day of Hoar Cross Hall pampering, than with a decadent afternoon tea served in the elegant Library? We don’t think so!

Make your stay even sweeter with three decadent tiers crammed with dainty sandwiches, exquisite sweet treats and crumbly scones with lashings of jam and clotted cream. Menus change with the seasons, but they’re all served alongside heritage teas and only the very best Champagne.

Does Hoar Cross Hall have a swimming pool?

It is. Hoar Cross Hall wants all of its guests to unwind in welcoming surroundings, so both the hotel and the day spa are wheelchair accessible. At the hotel you’ll find two designated accessible bedrooms providing 24-hour pull cord assistance and assisted bathrooms, plus a further five ground floor bedrooms suitable for limited access. At the spa, there’s a pool hoist for the saltwater, accessible changing rooms and a heat room area off the swimming pool that’s wheelchair accessible.

What are the check-in and check-out times for overnight stays?

Here on a spa stay? Check-in times vary by room types, so it’s best to check your booking confirmation. Generally, if you’re in a Comfy Suite, Garden Suite, Exclusive Suite, Hot Tub Suite & Royal Suite you can check-in at 3pm. Snug, Comfy, Garden View, Comfy for Three and Quad guests can check in at 4pmā€‹. All guests have to vacate their rooms by 11am.

What should I pack for Hoar Cross Hall?

Remember to bring your credit card because Hoar Cross Hall is a cashless venue. Other than that, don’t forget your activewear, trainers water bottle to take part in fitness classes. It’s also worth bringing a couple of swimming costumes so you have a dry one to wear for treatments.

Flip-flops can be purchased but feel free to bring your own. Other than that, you’ll be given a snuggly robe and towel, and the changing rooms are well-equipped with luxurious shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, body lotion and hair dryers.

What activities do I need to book at Hoar Cross Hall?

Feeling fit? You’ll need to book tennis, gym and classes with the gym reception on arrival. Bikes and electric bikes can also be booked for use in the grounds and surrounding areas at the gym desk (available March - November). For manicures and hair cuts at the Parlour, it’s best to book prior to your visit, so give them a call on 01283 576512.

Where is Hoar Cross Hall located?

You’ll find it in the tiny village of Hoar Cross, situated in the countryside of Staffordshire in the West Midlands, right at the end of a meandering country road. Because of its central UK location it makes a handy (and incredibly luxurious) place for friends and family to get together. It’s pretty much equidistant from Burton-on-Trent, Uttoxeter and Lichfield.

Is Hoar Cross Hall family friendly?

No, it’s blissfully adults-only, for those aged over 16 years, and that includes the hotel, spa and restaurants. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult for overnight stays. For specific events, such as Christmas, this may differ.

Hold the doggy manicure! No pets of any kind can visit Hoar Cross Hall, with the exception of assistance dogs.

Does Hoar Cross Hall have a golf course?

Hoar Cross Hall has its own driving range. Just ‘swing by’ spa reception on arrival if you want to have a go.
