About

Dream of stepping into a world of wellness, where your every need is met, and all your responsibilities gently drift away? A place where you can swap stress for saunas, busy days for bubbly hot tubs and your endless to-do list for hours of unmatched serenity? Then get that snuggly robe on and turn those dreams into reality, right here at Champneys Henlow.

As Britain’s first ever health farm, the Champneys name is synonymous with relaxation and luxury. Champneys Henlow is one of the group’s resorts, a health retreat with a laser focus on revitalising your mind, body or soul - or a combination of all three. But forget nibbling on lettuce leaves because at Champneys Henlow it's all about balance - wholesome, yes. But with just the right amount of indulgence thrown in for good measure.

Sweep up the grand driveway past 150 acres of parkland to the picture-perfect 18th century red-brick country house. The site of a former Cistercian monastery, monks once roamed here in their white robes. And, because you too can wear your soft towelling robe pretty much everywhere at all times (except at dinner), the history of Henlow Grange has truly come full circle!

The grounds here are, quite frankly, idyllic. The river Hix runs through immaculate gardens, and on sunny days nothing beats sprawling on a daybed or beanbag to listen to the rushing sound of the weir, admiring the colourful beds of flowers and the riverside wildlife.

But while it may be a nature-lover’s paradise outside, step inside to live out all your Downton Abbey fantasies thanks to elegant rooms, twinkling chandeliers and open fires. Contemporary design touches and snuggly furnishings keep the vibe serene, but not stuffy, and there’s even an orangery filled with lush plants and comfy seats.

But the jewel in the crown is the stunning spa. With endless spaces devoted solely to the art of relaxation, you can float amid the pillars, plants, and statues of the warm indoor pool, then flit between all the thermal experiences on offer.

Get your glow on with a Champneys or Elemis signature treatment, but if you like to work out as well as chill out, there are garden games, bikes to borrow, an urban gym and spin room, two fitness studios and a weekly calendar of activities (some chargeable) to partake in.

Tucked away on the edge of the quiet Bedfordshire village of Henlow, intriguing day trip options abound. The lively market town of Bedford is just a 30-minute drive, while you can be viewing the charming architecture of Cambridge in 45 minutes. History buffs will love the Military Intelligence Museum in nearby Shefford, while Herrings Green Activity Farm & Bird of Prey Centre is a must for nature-lovers.

But with so many different ways to spoil yourself, chances are you’ll have a hard time leaving everything that’s on offer right here. More than just relaxing, a spa retreat here can be transformational for your health and happiness. So just robe up, recharge and let Champneys Henlow be your pampering playground.

The Spa & Wellness at Champneys Henlow Grange Spa Resort

Upstairs you may feel like lord and lady of the manor in a bygone age, but head down to the basement and you’ll step right into the present day in the sumptuous spa. Old meets new here - quite literally! As you meander down the corridor you can see the exposed beams of the historic building give way to the spa’s contemporary extension.

Pad past the spa boutique and through quiet courtyard gardens to reach the large double-height space that houses the main pool. Light streams through floor-to-ceiling windows here, so float, do some invigorating laps, or simply relax on the plush rattan chairs and day beds and admire the views out onto the garden.

Henlow’s speciality is relaxation. You’re spoilt for choice for places to chill between treatments and fitness activities, from sunlit conservatories to Scandi-inspired pods. Just make sure you don’t relax so deeply you forget to have a treatment! Champneys and Elemis rituals offer radiance-boosting facials and tension-melting massages, designed to release stress and promote deep relaxation. Or, embark on a detoxifying journey with a body wrap, infusing your skin with revitalising minerals and essential oils.

If you crave active pampering, the mud rasul promises an invigorating experience. Immerse yourself in a steam room as a therapist applies a stimulating mud mask, leaving your skin tingling and your spirits lifted.

But Champneys Henlow caters to more than just physical pampering. Nurture your mind and spirit with holistic therapies like mindfulness sessions, helping you reconnect with your inner self. Or try a detoxifying seaweed flotation and feel your tension drift away.

The Gym & Fitness at Champneys Henlow Grange Spa Resort

Forget boring workouts. Movement feels fun, fresh and invigorating at Champneys Henlow. This countryside haven isn't just about facials and massages (unless you want it to be). It’s a celebration of your holistic well-being, where fitness soothes your mind and soul, as well as toning your body.

Step into the urban gym, a modern space boasting top-of-the-line equipment for solo workouts or personalised training sessions. Sculpt your muscles with free weights, tone up on the resistance machines, or get your heart pumping on the treadmills. Want to push yourself? Challenge yourself with Urban HIIT, where high-intensity bursts leave you energised and empowered.

But fitness at Champneys goes beyond the gym. Embrace the outdoors with a guided gratitude walk through the scenic grounds, taking in the fresh air and the beauty of nature. Feel the rhythm with Zumba or ignite your core with Pilates in the sun-drenched studio. If water is more your element, aqua aerobics offers a low-impact workout to a pumping soundtrack.

And the fun doesn't stop there! Gather your friends for a game of tennis, badminton, or table tennis, adding a social twist to your workout. Borrow bikes to explore the grounds or lace up your walking boots for one of the three country hikes.

Whether you're a seasoned athlete or a total fitness newbie, Champneys Henlow caters to every level. Friendly and knowledgeable instructors are on hand to make sure you push your limits without compromising on safety. So, ditch the restrictive routines and embrace movement that's not just good for you, but feels truly joyful. Your body and mind will thank you for coming to Champneys Henlow.

My husband and I were given a voucher for a spa evening at Champneys, Henlow with a three course meal included. We could use all the facilities and join in any classes. I didn’t, but I paid for a lava shell massage instead which was very relaxing. My husband joined in the aqua fit class. The spa was very clean, the facilities good and the staff pleasant. The meal was delicious but the glass of Prosecco (half a glass actually) was £8.50. I did have quite a problem getting the evening arranged though, and was on the phone for over 30 minutes. However it was a very pleasant evening.

The Spa is in very attractive buildings. Reception was very busy on the morning we arrived. We got a locker key and were shown to the dining room to have breakfast before heading to the changing rooms. Pool area was excellent and we enjoyed the sauna and Jacuzzi. Lunch was tasty with a choice of options. The gym area was good and we used that before changing and visiting the shops. Overall a really nice way to spend the day with my sister.

Booked an evening spa package online with ease. Greeted on arrival by efficient reception staff then shown through facilities. Our group of 7 friends then enjoyed almost 3 hours of relaxation and fun in the pool, Jacuzzi, steam room and sauna before a nice 3 course meal. A very pleasurable experience that we would love to repeat soon.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a swimming pool at Champneys Henlow?

Whether you’re floating in it, taking part in an aqua class or simply lounging beside it, life’s better by the pool - particularly when that pool just happens to be the warm, azure rectangle at Champneys Henlow. The gleaming 25m pool is the hub of your spa experience. It’s so large that it's divided into two, so no other swimmers will get between you and your front crawl.

Is there accommodation at Champneys Henlow?

If all that pampering has made you feel sleepy, you’re in luck. Champneys Henlow has cosy 71 bedrooms and suites to help you drift off into a blissful slumber. Each offers luxury bathrooms with signature Champneys toiletries and many boast views of the tranquil grounds. You can even book cute Scandi-inspired shepherd’s huts in the grounds if you fancy a bit of glamping.

What time is check-in and check-out at Champneys Henlow?

Champneys Spa Days at Champneys Henlow start at 9am and end at 6pm, but do check your booking confirmation for full details. For residential stays, check-in is from 3pm, and check out is by 11am, but some spa breaks allow you to carry on using the facilities after you’ve checked out of your room.

Is Champneys Henlow accessible?

Yes it is. There’s a ramp to get you into the building and a lift inside to get you upstairs. Treatment rooms have adjustable beds and some bedrooms in the hotel are adapted for accessibility.

Is Champneys Henlow a Champneys’ resort?

Yes it is. Champneys has four resorts - Tring, Forest Mere, Henlow and Springs. These are health spas with a laser focus on your health and wellbeing.

Its two luxury spa hotels, Champneys Henlow and Mottram Hall, feature all the mod cons you’d expect from a destination hotel (think elegant interiors, gourmet dining and afternoon tea) along with a Champneys spa.

Where is Champneys Henlow located?

You’ll find Champneys Henlow conveniently located in central Bedfordshire, tucked at the end of a quiet cul de sac in the village of Henlow. Henlow is best known for its RAF base, and a number of serving armed forces members and their families live in the village.

Henlow is between Bedford and Luton which are both 30 minutes away. Cambridge is also nearby - just a 45-minute drive away. And, with the bright lights of Central London just an hour's drive away, you’re spoilt for choice for things to do.

What should I bring for a Champneys spa day at Champneys Henlow?

Very little, as you’ll be spending most of your day swanning around in your complimentary towelling robe and flip-flops! You’ll obviously need swimwear to wear in the pool and thermal facilities. But it's a good idea to bring some spare swimwear or dry underwear to keep you feeling comfortable when you go for lunch, or if you’re planning on booking into a treatment.

You’ll also need activewear and trainers if you’re going to use the gym or have a class, and a spare pair for outdoors if you fancy a stroll around the grounds. And, if you’re thinking about staying for dinner, you’ll need something smart/casual to wear. Just remember to reserve your table in advance.

Do I get to keep the flip flops provided at Champneys Henlow?

Yes you do! Flip flops are provided to all guests and are yours to keep. They’re also anti-slip tested so they’re perfect for the spa and poolside.

Who owns Champneys Henlow?

It’s part of the destination spa group Champneys, which is owned by the Purdew family. Founded on the philosophy that health, beauty and wellbeing are inextricably intertwined, its pioneering concepts continue to inspire to this day.

What is the history of Champneys Henlow?

Henlow Grange was the home of nobility until it was bought In 1960 by Leida Costigan, an Estonian-born beauty specialist and her husband. She turned it into a ‘health farm’ (as health retreats were called in those days), but only welcomed six guests at a time.

It was bought by Champneys founders Bob and Dorothy Purdew in 1981 and extensively refurbished in 2018, which gave Champneys Henlow a new modern and contemporary feel without losing any of the original building’s eclectic character.

Is Champneys Henlow family-friendly?

Sorry, it’s not. Champneys Henlow is an adult-only destination, for those over the age of 16.

Is Champneys Henlow pet-friendly?

Sorry! No pampered pooches allowed, only guide dogs and hearing dogs.

Does Champneys Henlow have a golf course?

No, Champneys Henlow doesn’t have a golf course, but there’s still plenty to do outdoors. Borrow a bike and go exploring, or lace up your walking boots and try one of the three hiking trails. Need your sporting fix? Take to the tennis courts for some garden games.
